TheMedical Technologist II, in their role as Testing Personnel and General Supervisoras defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the technicaloversight of the chemistry laboratory including the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operation andpersonnel performing testing and reporting results.

Undergeneral supervision, carries out all policies and performs all tests inaccordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient andorganized manner to assure accurate results and records. Assists with training of staff. The work requires a professional level ofknowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers inthe diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities that may be delegated in writing tothe Clinical Supervisor (General Supervisor - high complexity)

  • Must be accessible to test personnel at all timestesting is performed and provide on-site telephone or electronic consultationto resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established in the Chemistry Laboratory.
  • Is responsible for providing day-to-daysupervision of high-complexity test performance by qualified testing personneland
  • Must be on-site to provide direct supervision whenhigh complexity testing is performed by an individual qualified before1/19/1993 (FR 493/1489(b)(5). Referred to Federal Register for exceptions whenwork can be reviewed within 24 hours by a general supervisor qualified under Fr493.1461. and
  • Is responsible for monitoring test analyses andspecimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performanceare maintained.

    Responsibilities as outlinedby CLIA:

    Testing personnel are responsible for specimenprocessing, test performance and for reporting test results.
  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling andprocessing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient testresults;
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples aretested in the same manner as patient specimens;
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all qualitycontrol activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenanceperformed;
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenevertest systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels ofperformance;
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect testperformance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problemsor immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinicalconsultant, or director;
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate fromthe laboratory's established performance specifications; and
  • If qualified under §493.1489(b)(5), perform high complexity testingonly under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualifiedunder §493.1461.

  • Exception: For individuals qualified under §493.1489(b)(5), who were performinghigh complexity testing on or before January 19, 1993, the requirements ofparagraph (b)(7) of this section are not effective, provided that all highcomplexity testing performed by the individual in the absence of a generalsupervisor is reviewed within 24 hours by a general supervisor qualified under§493.1461.

    Additionalresponsibilities may include the following under the direction of the TechnicalDirector and Clinical Supervisor:

  • Performs routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures onblood and other body fluids, according to laboratory policies.

  • Prepares samples and reagents for testing according to laboratorypolicies.

  • Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of all testresults according to laboratory policies.

  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for allreagents.


  • Keeps accurate records of quality control, maintenance and workloaddata according to laboratory policies.

  • Responsible to document all corrective action procedures undertaken inthe clinical laboratory.

  • Refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties anddocuments all corrective action procedures undertaken in the clinical laboratory.

  • Performs clerical and support services as needed, such as answering thetelephone, calling Super Stat, Code sample results, and /or alert values to theappropriate department or Licensed Care Provider, disposing of contaminatedspecimens, control of inventory, monitoring pending logs, and other assignedduties.

  • Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling andanalysis of Proficiency Testing material.


  • Communicates with hospitalpersonnel providing assistance related to laboratory policies and procedures,laboratory utilization, and test result interpretation.


  • Additional responsibilitiesmay include ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory andlaboratory supplies.

  • Keeps current in developmentsin technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in clinical laboratory.

    Participates in internal andexternal continuing education.

  • Promotes the mission andvision of Brigham and Women's Hospital and laboratories, and a spirit ofprofessionalism and excellence in performance among the laboratory staff.


  • Adheres to hospital andlaboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control andsafety plans.

  • Performs any other duties asrequired, which may include but not limited to general laboratory duties suchas processing specimens, logging in specimens, putting supplies away, washingpipettes, discarding laboratory samples, racking samples, etc.



  • SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • The knowledge,both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to reviewfindings and advise and direct subordinates in action.


  • The manual/visual dexterity and skills necessary to operate adjust andmake repairs to various types of automated and non-automated laboratoryequipment.

  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and itsoperation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.


  • Must have understanding of computer technology and its application tochemical analytical procedures and quality control.

  • Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations andact appropriately. Must be able to remain calm and productive under constantpressure and emergency situations, which produce a high level of stress andmental fatigue.


  • Must have neat and orderly work habits.

  • Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhereto written protocols.

  • Must be able to perform as a team member, provide leadership, guidanceand direction to staff.


  • Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.

  • Excellent interpersonalskills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staffincluding physicians, hospital personnel, employees and patients.


  • Excellent communicationskills.


  • Knowledge of Federal, State,Joint Commission and other regulatory regulations.



  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Busy, stressful clinical laboratory environment.

  • Exposure to infectious blood, urine, and other body fluids

  • Work requires frequent standing, walking and/or occasional lifting orcarrying of supplies.

  • Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.



  • Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Mustpossess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology orChemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college oruniversity.

    Or

  • Other qualifications as described in theFederal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495.

  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.

  • Two years of experience as a Medical Technologist.

  • If an internal candidate, evaluated at a score no lowerthan 'Effective' for the past two performance evaluations.
