Loyola Medicine, treating the whole person with compassion-to \"also treat the human spirit.\" The Laboratory Department-Blood Bank seeks an experienced Apheresis Nurse to perform apheresis procedures on patients and donors.
In this role, the Apheresis Nurse performs apheresis procedures on patients and donors in a professional manner, which focuses on the needs of the patient/donor and exemplifies the service excellence goals of care, concern, respect and cooperation. The Apheresis Nurse is responsible to the Apheresis Coordinator, Manager and Medical Directors.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Patient/Donor Assessment - Assesses patient/donor prior to, during and post procedures to assure safety at all times and consults with the medical director if necessary. Continuously evaluates patient/donor for procedure reactions and initiates any additional medical treatment in accordance with physician's orders. Obtains orders and assures that proper consent forms are completed prior to procedure. Assesses vascular access for adequacy for procedure and possible need for a vascular access device. Interviews prospective apheresis donors and determines suitability for donation based on SOPs and regulatory guidelines. Documents patient's physical and emotional status in order to address patient needs appropriately.
  • Patient/Donor Care - Performs therapeutic/donor apheresis including:
    plasma exchange, therapeutic cytapheresis, stem cell collection,
    Photopheresis, , red cell exchange LDL Apheresis and allogeneic blood
    component collections. Performs Autologous blood collection and
    Therapeutic Phlebotomy procedures demonstrating phlebotomy skills.
    Properly assembles and prepares equipment for all patient/donor
    procedures in accordance with established SOP'S. Collects and records
    initial and follow-up lab data. Properly operates blood processing
    equipment in accordance with written SOPs. Completes all
    documentation. Coordinates care with other members of the health care
    team. Integrates evidence-based practice and professional standards
    whenever possible.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Specify Degree(s): Nursing
  • 1-2 years of previous job-related experience
  • Preferred:
  • 3-5 years of previous job-related experience

Licensure/Certifications:
Required:

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) from American Heart Association
  • Current Registered Nurse License State of Illinois
Preferred:
  • Hemapheresis Practitioner certification -HP (ASCP)
