A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) is seeking an exempt Anatomy Lab Manager/Instructor on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Director of Anatomy. The Anatomy Lab Manager/Instructor will work collaboratively with health professions faculty and students and contribute to supporting the delivery of high quality graduate education in an active learning environment. The Human Anatomy Lab Manager and Instructor will be housed in the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences (DIHS) and operate to support and assist faculty from ATSU schools (health sciences, medical, and dental) who use the shared anatomy lab space for teaching courses on the Mesa, AZ campus

Job Summary

The Human Anatomy Lab Manager and Instructor will work with faculty to coordinate teaching labs and provide instructional support with the opportunity to help in instructional activities (as needed, as qualified). The individual in this position will coordinate with the body donation program in procuring and returning anatomical specimens; maintain all records and inventory of anatomical specimens while stored and used for teaching in the anatomy labs; coordinate the dissection of anatomical specimens, which may include scheduling, performing, instructing students, and supervising students, staff, and faculty in achieving the dissection needs identified for teaching. Other duties including lab safety, maintenance of equipment/computers/AV system, inventory, ordering supplies, and supporting virtual and online anatomy lab instruction. Instruction will be primarily in the anatomy lab, with additional opportunities for independent and/or team teaching in didactic courses (as needed, as qualified).

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee procurement and returning of anatomical specimens; maintaining inventory of teaching specimens
  • Maintain inventory of anatomy lab supplies, place orders in the online purchasing system for supplies and equipment, confirm receipt of purchases and record in the online purchasing system. This includes tracking use trends and anticipating needs so lab workflow is not disrupted.
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of supplies and equipment, and monitoring of lab safety and cleanliness. This includes submitting requests and working with facilities, IT, and other service offices to address needs in a timely manner.
  • Work with institutional facilities and safety committee/personnel to ensure compliance with standards, state and federal guidelines, OSHA, etc.
  • Work with vendors, such as hazardous waste and laundry.
  • Request bids and estimates for all equipment and supplies to assist with budget planning.
  • Track data on lab usage by students, of equipment and supplies, etc. and generate reports.
  • Assist with coordinating preparation and set-up for anatomy labs and practical exams
  • Act as liaison between faculty from all schools and programs using the anatomy lab for teaching and schedule lab times in room booking system accordingly
  • Supervise and coordinate work study lab monitors and teaching assistants
  • Perform, instruct, and supervise dissection of anatomical specimens (as qualified and needed)
  • Maintain and operate anatomy lab equipment, computers, AV system
  • Ability to transport, lift, and move anatomical specimens (eg, human donors)
  • Attend anatomy program meetings, as requested
  • Assist in coordinating events hosted in the anatomy lab to guests (eg, other ATSU groups, community partners, continuing education courses, etc.)
  • Proctor exams – classroom and lab practical
  • Assist in lab instruction (as qualified and needed)
  • Assist in develop virtual anatomy learning activities (as qualified and needed)

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in anatomy, biological science, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in a human anatomy laboratory performing dissection and lab-based instruction.
  • Proficient in productivity and educational technology software such as Google Apps, Microsoft Office, video conferencing tools (eg, Zoom).
  • Ability to write, proofread, and edit instructional materials for various students and audiences.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and supervise student workers who assist with dissection and anatomy lab operations.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements on the job (see details below)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Credentials and experience as a health care provider.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience managing and coordinating operations of a human anatomy laboratory.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience instructing health professions students in anatomy, including hands-on laboratory and dissection.
  • Experience in software such as virtual anatomy platforms (eg, Complete Anatomy, Anatomy.TV), learning management systems (eg, Canvas), and interactive or related educational technologies and tools.
  • Comfortable developing and delivering clinical anatomy content to graduate health professions students in varied settings (eg, laboratory, small group, lecture classroom)
  • Experience managing multiple projects and group needs effectively

Physical requirements of Anatomy Lab Manager and Instructor:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a laboratory setting, which include:
  • to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time;
  • to often stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist;
  • to lift, carry, push, and/or pull minimum 75 lbs of weight to transport cadavers, large containers, equipment/
  • supplies;
  • to operate laboratory and office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use
  • of a computer keyboard;
  • to verbally communicate to exchange information – to anatomy team, vendors, and users (faculty, staff) of the
  • anatomy lab
  • to maintain inventory
  • place orders for supplies and equipment
  • Perform and/or oversee lab safety training, cleaning and maintenance, and facility safety requirements
  • requires the wearing, ordering, and oversight of personal protective equipment including safety glasses or goggles,
  • lab coats, rubber or plastic gloves, respirators, or face shields
  • To perform and instruct in cadaveric dissection, which involves long duration of standing and performing manual
  • tasks, transporting, lifting, and repositioning cadavers (~75-100 lbs of strength to do this task). The majority of
  • dissection occurs during the spring – early fall semesters and sessions are scheduled ~4-5 hours 2-3 times a week.
