About the Department

Alumni Relations & Development (ARD) engages alumni (~190k), current students, parents and friends of the University through intellectual, professional and social activities on campus, around the world and online. ARD raises $550 Million annually to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Our work supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute. This position will be an integral part of the New York City based Regional Major Gifts team, which has a primary focus on qualification, cultivation and solicitation of individual donors towards making gifts of $100K to $5 million to the University. As general representatives of the University, Regional Major Gift Officers work on behalf of a wide range of academic leaders, and endeavor to match donors and their philanthropic interests with the University's priorities and key initiatives.

Job Summary

The job implements programs designed to meet fundraising goals for contributed income with moderate guidance. Helps build relationships with alumni, faculty, administrators and organizations with potential to make gifts at the instruction of others. Executes communication strategies for projects.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards alumni, parents and friends who have the capacity to make financial commitments of $100,000 and up to the University of Chicago.
  • Develops and implements compelling engagement strategies to inspire high net worth individuals to maximize their philanthropic engagement with the University.
  • Develops and manages a portfolio of major gift prospects through suspect qualification.
  • Builds and manages a prospect pipeline that would support an annualized pace of 10 major gift commitments per year, with over 100 corresponding prospect visits.
  • Achieves personal fundraising and activity goals monthly, quarterly and annually.
  • As a generalist fundraiser, builds product knowledge of a variety of priorities and initiatives. Partners with other units, schools, and Divisions to solicit and steward annual and endowed support.
  • Arranges for prospects to meet with appropriate University staff and faculty and write thoughtful and succinct briefings.
  • Delivers timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors including compelling proposals.
  • Plans and executes a local strategy to affiliate alumni donors with long-range potential for major gifts.
  • Attends periodic alumni events.
  • Provides scheduled and ad hoc updates to manager and senior leaders on progress and strategies and enters timely contact reports.
  • Periodic travel to Chicago and to assigned geographic regions. Your portfolio will mainly focus on the Tri-State area surrounding New York City. Additional regions may be assigned.
  • This role will be based in the University of Chicago's New York Office and will assist in the smooth operation of the shared office.
  • Seeks opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance including attending webinars, seminars, building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.
  • Identifies and qualifies prospects by aiding in expanding the pool of potential donors and participating in outreach events. Manages a portfolio of prospective donors.
  • Build relationships with a variety of different individuals within the University in the assigned divisions and departments of those who make charitable gifts.
  • Writes timely and strategic correspondences to advance relationships.
  • Works with others to maximize prospective donor cultivation.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Advanced degree.

Experience:
  • Minimum two years of professional work experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including the University's donor relationship management system and the Microsoft Office Suite.
