JOB SUMMARY

Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) Mental Health at the University of Connecticut seeks qualified applicants for the Assistant Director of Training/Director of the Multicultural Training Program, for a full-time, 12-month position. The ideal candidate will develop a Multicultural Training Program for mental health interns and practicum students, as well as training opportunities for staff, cultivating cross-cultural knowledge and skills with the goal of providing the highest standard of training in the culturally competent practice of professional psychology and social work.

Under the general direction of the SHaW Mental Health Director of Training, this position will be responsible for development, implementation and oversight of a program focused on training multi-culturally oriented mental health clinicians as a core component of the overall SHaW mental health training program.  SHaW Mental Health provides APA-accredited doctoral internships, social work internships and psychology practicum training opportunities. The Assistant Director will have multicultural expertise and knowledge relative to training and best practices guidelines.

The successful candidate will provide leadership, coordination and supervision for the SHaW mental health training program, including supporting the APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship in psychology, as well as coordinating and delivering professional development opportunities with a particular focus on training for working with students of color or other marginalized identities. The incumbent will demonstrate a commitment to promoting social justice and human dignity and eliminating the impact of oppression in a collegiate mental health setting. 

The Assistant Director will also assist the Director of Training with the overall management of SHaW's training, professional development and outreach services, and will provide direct clinical services, including assessment and psychotherapy, emergency care and consulting services to the University community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and delivers training grounded in cultural humility and focused on culturally competent behavioral health care for underserved populations and provides interns with supervised experiences in traditional psychological techniques appropriately modified for working cross-culturally.
  • Supervises and trains graduate-level students from regionally accredited graduate education programs.  Establishes relationships with those programs to support recruitment and success of interns and practicum students.
  • Creates training opportunities to increase sensitivity to aspects of behavior associated with cross-cultural and transcultural experiences which are involved in mental health, mental illness and recovery. Develop training that builds skills and techniques that amplify the importance of culture in practice, policy and research. Remain current on local, national and global issues and trends in diversity and inclusion and applies emerging information to inform training opportunities.
  • Supports the maintenance of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship in professional psychology and creates a strong clinical experience for interns and practicum students that promotes training mental health professionals while also meeting all academic requirements of their graduate program.
  • Carries a clinical case load, provides psychotherapy counseling to individuals, couples and groups, consulting with other professionals as necessary; diagnoses, assesses and treats emotional and functional disorders through brief model psychotherapy.
  • As scheduled, provides 24-hour emergency on-call service and crisis intervention counseling for students who have mental health events with the ability to support evening hours until 6:00 p.m.
  • Meets regularly with professional colleagues to assess, diagnose, and plan treatment and disposition of cases.
  • Meets regularly with the Director of Training to establish and discuss training and professional development priorities, budget, personnel/staffing issues, mission, vision, and strategic planning; reviews plans for implementation of such.
  • Prepares appropriate clinical records, case reports, and necessary correspondence.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining policies and procedures of the mental health training and professional development program, ensuring adherence to best training practices, applicable standards for accreditation and professional codes of ethics governing graduate-level training.
  • Prepares timely narrative and statistical reports (i.e. annual reports and accreditation standards reports) of all activities for use in evaluation of the training program; provides annual update and evaluation of clinical program outcomes; reports regularly to the Director of Training concerning the ongoing progress of the training program; compiles data to analyze and identify risks, trends and gaps in the program.
  • Monitors, evaluates and keeps informed of cutting-edge standards of practice in the university counseling center field and keeps abreast of pertinent regulations, accreditation standards, publications, and information; provides comparison analysis to Director of Training for evaluation.
  • Conducts workshops and outreach services designed to provide mental health education to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and parents.
  • Serves on departmental and/or university committees representing SHaW and applicable policies and procedures to stakeholders and constituencies; responsible for communicating with appropriate university partners and various mental health and academic faculty in regards to the training program.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master's or Doctoral degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy or related field.
    • Licensed in the State of Connecticut as a Psychologist or immediately eligible for licensure within one year.
    • At least one year of post-graduate work experience providing psychotherapeutic counseling to adolescents and young adults.
    • Must have a demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity issues in the delivery and management of clinical services.
    • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
    • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate information effectively.
    • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations effectively.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
    • More than two years of post-graduate work experience providing psychotherapeutic counseling to adolescents and young adults.
    • Experience in a progressively responsible administrative role within a mental health service.
    • Previous experience serving collegiate mental health population.
    • Previous experience training graduate-level students within mental health.
    • Demonstration of a sustained commitment to delivering equitable, inclusive and accessible mental health services.
    APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, 12-month position with an anticipated start date of July 2021 or earlier.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
