About the Department

The Office of the Dean of Students in the College has broad responsibility for the success of all College students. The Dean of Students reports to the Dean of the College. The staff of academic advisers, senior advisers and deans provide academic advising; counseling to students around academic and personal issues, and long-term planning; referrals for students to other campus resources; advice on preparation for graduate and professional school. The Dean of Students staff needs to understand University policies and the College curriculum, and will also interact with faculty, parents, and staff from other offices. Senior staff members (Deans and Senior Advisers) lead office initiatives and committees provide evaluations of transfer credit, liaison with the registrar's office and ITS, work with the Collegiate Masters and faculty program chairs in the majors on curricular revisions and the Catalog. Job Summary

A member of the staff of the Dean of Students in the College (DOS), the Assistant Director of Transfer Students, works on a variety of College Academic Advising Office (CAAO) and College Programming and Orientation (CPO) projects. Specifically, the Assistant Director of Transfer Students will assist with providing an initial evaluation of transfer credit for admitted transfer students and a finalized evaluation of transfer credit for transfer students who matriculate. This involves working closely with colleagues in College Admissions and academic departments. They will assist with the posting of transfer credit and the development of transfer student programming as well as novel ways of improving the transfer student experience. The Assistant Director of Transfer Students will also work with the CPO on Orientation events for students to ensure a comparative and connected experience to the institution and affinity initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Provides preliminary evaluation of transfer credit.
  • Assists with finalized credit evaluations for transfer students who matriculate.
  • Assists with the posting of transfer credit to student records.
  • Overseesthe orientation programs for transfer students.
  • Tracks students' progress towards completion of their degrees.Leads communications to students related to University policies, expectations, and status associated with academic milestones.
  • Understandsand interpretsUniversity policies and deadlines andaccess information through various electronic student-systems databases.
  • Maintains records of students' degree programs andmakesnotes on student conversations. Employs counseling skills for dealing with troubled students and establishes good working relationships with all types of students.
  • Designs and facilitates transfer student engagement materials and programs such as topic specific webinars and group advising curriculum.
  • Organizes quarterly/annual data projects; analyzes, and communicates data to stakeholders.
  • In conjunction with the advising deans, supports summer operations for incoming transfer student pre-registration, including updating new student website, facilitating new student webinars, and collaborating with partner offices on other new student onboarding initiatives.
  • Designs, implements and maintains student academic and administrative policies. Translates specialized knowledge of academic functions to complicated advising matters. Has a deep understanding of the activities of Study Abroad/ International Programs and functions for the University's graduate and undergraduate programs.
  • Manages on-boarding efforts related to coursework and academic planning delivered through various channels and on-line tools. Works mostly independently to facilitate graduation-related functions related to academic and degree requirements.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Advanced degree with a 6-year minimum gap between date of college graduationand appointment as senior adviser.

Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years experience in higher education or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experienceworkinginanacademic advisingoffice.
  • Familiarity with University of Chicago structure and functions of its various offices and departments.
  • Strong commitment to young adults and the values and goals of aliberal arts education.

PreferredCompetencies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent editing/proofreading ability in English.
  • Handle multiple concurrent tasks in a competent and professional manner while also meeting deadlines.
  • Work effectively with supervision and as a part of a team, individually or while taking directions from others.
  • Provide excellent academic advising to undergraduates and mastery of practices of academic advisers.
  • Collaborate with faculty.
