General Summary:

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Academic Excellence, the Assistant Director of Tutoring Programs serves as a member of the ASP/Center for Academic Excellence leadership team and ensures the effective delivery of all tutoring services provided by the Center. With the Director, the incumbent works to develop and implement programs to achieve ongoing Center developmental goals, including, but not limited to, programs designed specifically to provide support for students in STEM majors. The Assistant Director's responsibilities include, in collaboration with the Director, developing and maintaining inter-departmental networks across the university to identify and address areas of need; recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising tutors; ensuring that coverage needs are met for course-specific and course-embedded tutoring; and providing professional development opportunities for tutors by assisting in the development and assessment of course content for ASP 120: Introduction to Peer Tutoring.

Examples of Duties:

  • Program Development
  • Work as a part of the Center for Academic Excellence team to develop, implement, and assess academic support programs designed to increase student retention and graduation rates; collaborate with other departments in VPASS and across the University to develop student-focused programs and services, including, but not limited to, workshops, invited class presentations, and targeted outreach to courses and student groups;
  • Collaborate with the Director and team members to provide increased STEM support with a strong focus on first-year math courses and expand course-specific and embedded tutoring programs to include course offerings at all levels across the disciplines;
  • Work closely with the Director to develop and maintain inter-departmental networks across the university to identify and address areas of need;
  • Program Management and Assessment
  • Work closely with the Center's Program Assistant to ensure efficient collaboration, record-keeping, and delivery of services within the Center;
  • Work with the Tutoring Programs Coordinator and Program Assistant to foster collaborative relationships with other University departments and programs;
  • Work closely with the Tutoring Programs Coordinator and Center's Program Assistant to ensure adequate staffing and coverage in both course-specific and course-embedded tutoring programs;
  • Lead Center's tutoring programs staff in the development of integrated, automated tutorial data collection and assessment. Assess key data on student tutoring registration, tutorial requests and tutorial usage with the aim to initiate new strategies for increasing new student participation and encouraging ongoing participation by students to promote retention;
  • Generate and evaluate program reports, and communicate findings to Center staff and all relevant stakeholders;
  • Collaborate with Center staff to promote awareness and knowledge of department services and programs and improve department UMB web pages for visibility, access, and usability;
  • Supervise the Center for Excellence Tutoring Program
  • In collaboration with the Tutoring Programs Coordinator, recruit, select, train, and supervise support staff and tutors (60-120 undergraduate and graduate students/semester);
  • Hold regular tutor meetings to address procedural elements of tutoring in Center programs, and design and implement professional development for tutors that focus on student-centered and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches to tutoring;
  • Teach at least 1 section per semester of ASP 120: Introduction to Peer Tutoring, a formalized professional training course for peer tutors.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.
  • Qualifications:

    • Master's degree; MS or EdM in STEM fields strongly preferred;
    • Three-five (3-5) years of experience training and supervising students and/or professional staff in a college or university tutoring center or similar program;
    • Three-five (3-5) years of experience post-secondary teaching, preferably STEM;
    • Three-five (3-5) years of experience teaching pre-collegiate students in transition to college; experience developing and implementing STEM programs for pre-collegiate students in transition to college strongly preferred;
    • Familiarity with tutoring pedagogy and best practices; experience implementing culturally relevant tutoring practices preferred;
    • Outstanding communication and public speaking skills and ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of institutional stakeholders and to establish effective channels of communication;
    • Ability to work and effectively cooperate in a team environment;
    • Proficiency with office and database software, social media, learning management systems (LMS), and web conferencing platforms;
    • Ability to manage data effectively and maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism;
    • Ability to maintain organized, accurate, and detailed records, evaluations, and program reports;
    • Aptitude in problem-solving and ability to handle and complete multiple programmatic tasks simultaneously;
    • High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
    • Strong commitment to student success and customer service;
    • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and PeopleSoft software.
