Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education and Director of Bands is a dynamic teacher with a strong background in bands and instrumental music education. The position is a non-tenure track, full time faculty position that includes directing Marching Band, Symphonic Band, teaching courses in instrumental music education, teaching private music lessons, and teaching general education music courses.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

This position will report directly to the Director of the School of Music and Theatre.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

This position is responsible for hiring and managing all band work study positions with assistance from the School of Music and Theatre Administrative Assistant. This position will also supervise student teaching field placements during the spring semester as part of their music education teaching load.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct the Marching (Fall only) and Symphonic Bands (Spring only).

Teach courses in Instrumental Conducting, Secondary Instrumental Music Education, Marching Band Techniques, and Brass Methods.

Teach general education courses including music appreciation, popular music, and other courses as needed.

Supervise student teachers in field placement.

Recruit majors and non-major participants for all SMT ensembles, programs and degrees.

Provide programming service to the SMT and larger Heidelberg Community.

Oversee student and/or faculty chamber music experiences.

Serve as the departmental Undergraduate Music Education Coordinator by coordinating field placements supervising instrumental music education field placements.

Serve as the primary academic advisor for Music Education majors and as the primary advisor for the Heidelberg chapter of the Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Professional Experience:

Master's in Music Education is required. A DMA or Phd in Music Education is preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of secondary school teaching experience, including both marching and symphonic band programming. 5 years teaching experience preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The ability to lead and develop a collegiate band program, and excellent classroom teaching skills are crucial. Demonstrated expertise in wind band conducting with broad knowledge of repertoire.

Recruiting ability is a primary requirement. Proven success in building an instrumental program at the secondary level is required.

The ability to collaborate with faculty, ensembles and programs within the School of Music and Theatre. Support and Service to School of Music and Theatre and to broad University constituencies is expected.

The ability to act as a representative for the School of Music and Theatre and Heidelberg University. Outstanding oral communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks, collaborating with colleagues and student workers.

Ability to travel and work weekends as needed according to SMT programming and recruitment endeavors.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Various instructional technologies including, but not limited to Google Suite, learning management systems such as Canvas, video conferencing, etc. Fluency on Pyware or other marching band drill programming is required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation. The employee is required to be mobile and be able to communicate clearly and effectively with others. Conducting is a primary responsibility of this candidate, fluid mobility and stamina for the torso and arms is necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in office and classroom settings as well as educational facilities including sports and entertainment venues, all of which may be indoor or outdoor. The employee may occasionally travel which may include evening and weekend commitments. The noise level in the work environment will range from quiet to moderately loud.
