FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Art Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Coding/Web-Based Media to begin in Fall 2023. Candidates should be prepared to teach courses in web design, web development, interaction design, and programming to BA and BFA students within the Electronic Design & Multimedia (EDM) Program of the Art Department. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking and creating, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand current conceptions of coding/web-based media.
Core EDM faculty responsibilities include:
The Art Department is part of the Division of Humanities & the Arts at City College of New York (CCNY). We have more than 750 undergraduate art majors and minors, and we offer graduate programs in Studio Art, Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice, Art History & Art Museum Studies, and Art Education. CCNY serves a large population of first-generation and historically marginalized students. Our current student population has roots in 153 countries; ninety-nine languages are spoken on campus.
In the Art Department, we aspire to nurture these diverse perspectives within our community of engaged artists, scholars, and educators. As a team, we cultivate innovative art practices, incisive scholarship, and progressive pedagogy. We strive to reimagine our curricula and classroom teaching to better meet the moment and serve the needs of first-generation college students navigating social injustices, psychological consequences of the pandemic, and other relevant issues. Faculty members in the Art Department work collaboratively to make curricular decisions, oversee departmental governance, manage critical administration, and support students as they navigate their collegiate experience.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA or equivalent degree in digital media art, web development, interaction design, or other closely related area of digital media
Two years of professional working experience in the field and/or a minimum of one year of full-time teaching at the university level, or other relevant context. Candidates will have a demonstrated record of teaching students from a variety of backgrounds, as well as administrative skills in the arts and/or program management. Candidates will possess experience in front and back-end web development and will be tasked with teaching HTML 5, CSS, and Javascript, as well as Python, PHP, and/or Processing. A strong visual aesthetic and excellent graphic design skills are essential. Knowledge of C# is desirable, as is secondary expertise in game design.
VACCINE REQUIREMENT:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
The Art Department is particularly interested in candidates who bring to their teaching practice an understanding of those underrepresented in the arts and concrete ideas about creating just and inclusive learning environments. We are interested in candidates who have a record of success teaching coding/web-based media and mentoring students, especially first-generation college students and those from historically marginalized communities. Ideal candidates will demonstrate knowledge of ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in the art world and willingness to engage in departmental discussions to uplift student and alumni experiences in the arts. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience with administrative skills in the arts and/or program management. We welcome applications from artists with alternative and interdisciplinary practices in coding/web-based media.
CCNY aims to embrace diverse perspectives and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that is working to better support students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or systematically marginalized identities to apply.
