Assistant Professor Translation and Interpretation

[Fall 2024]

Dominican University seeks applicants for Assistant Professor of Translation and Interpretation, specializing in the teaching of consecutive, simultaneous and conference interpreting. The candidate should have an active research agenda in the theory, practice and teaching of Translation and Interpreting Studies and/or significant years of experience in the profession and teaching the skills. Expertise in interpretation within legal and/or health settings with ample experience using technology within the classroom and the field is required.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Teach 7 undergraduate and graduate courses per year (21 credits) distributed across Core Seminars, CRWS, Interpreting, Intro. to Translation, and advanced Translation courses in Translation and Applied Cultural Studies major.
  2. Work collaboratively with colleagues to envision and expand our current translation program, including the minor, A.A., major and graduate certificate.
  3. Engage in research and publication
  4. Mentor and advise students
  5. Assist the department in outreach and recruitment
  6. Provide service to the program, university, and profession

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Translation & Interpretation or related academic program, A.B.D. or M.A. in Translation or equivalent degree in the legal or health field, with significant professional experience teaching Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish T&I courses from an accredited U.S. or International Institution.
  • Experience teaching interpretation methods, note-taking, and memory techniques at the college level.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in language pedagogy with career-oriented outcomes.
  • Advanced-High or higher proficiency on the ACTFL scale in Spanish and English.

Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching racially minoritized students and demonstrated experience creating, organizing, and/or leading programs for minoritized student populations.

  • Experience in Spanish for legal services and/or health services and translation technologies.
  • Experience in teaching with technology and developing online courses.
  • Teaching experience in general Higher Education.
  • Interest in serving heritage language students and ability to integrate heritage language teaching methodologies into a T&I curriculum.
  • Teamwork experience and demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary program development and potential for engaging in collaborative projects across all units at the university, not only academic.
  • Demonstrated interest in applied humanities and community engagement.
