(Contingent upon available funding): 23.00 - 29.50, Hourly Work Schedule: TBD, 40 hours per week minimum Faculty Appt Period: Job Summary: The incumbent supports the activities of the university's radiation safety program, which serves a diverse group of individuals in a research-intensive environment; thus, the incumbent must work to assist university personnel in meeting safety standards. Under the general supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer, the incumbent oversees or assists with many functions of the radiation safety program, monitors for radiation safety compliance, and implements radiation safety practices for a broad range of Oklahoma State University-Stillwater (OSU) and Oklahoma State University-Tulsa (OSU-T) research activities.Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, from 8:00am - 5:00pm. However, due to deadlines and other factors, hours outside the normal working schedule may be required. Travel is required, including travel for training and professional development. Due to communication requirements for the position, the incumbent will be required to maintain cellular or other electronic communication device. The incumbent's salary includes additional compensation to apply towards the use of their personal cellular device or a university cellular device will be provided.There exists a potential for exposure to hazardous environments (i.e. spills and other accidents involving hazardous materials). This position is a first line responder to such accidents.

The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer:
1. Assists in the preparation of the radiation safety program evaluation report.
2. Assesses status of compliance with regulations, license conditions, permits, guidelines, and OSU policies and reports issues of noncompliance as required.
3. Evaluates training requirements, confirms training compliance and assists with providing educational training programs.
4. Assigns and modifies online radiation safety training when required.
5. Identifies and mitigates safety risks through application of ALARA principles.
6. Takes timely action to address and report any activity found to be unsafe or a threat to health or property.
7. Coordinates laboratory and facility inspections to identify issues of noncompliance and suggested corrective actions.
8. Assists in the implementation and maintenance of Increased Controls as necessary.
9. Responds to incidents and emergencies involving radioactive materials and makes independent decisions regarding appropriate action.
10. In the absence of the RSO for short periods of time, assumes the tasks and duties associated with managing the radiation safety program
11. Coordinates the dosimetry program and the timely distribution and collection of dosimeters.
12. Reviews dosimetry results for anomalous exposures and reports anomalies to ensure that exposures are being kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
13. Manages intra-campus billing of dosimetry service.
14. Assists with incidents and dose reconstruction investigations.
15. Operates and maintains radiation counting laboratory equipment with accurate documentation.
16. Monitors radioisotope and X-ray inventories and follows up on discrepancies to ensure compliance with established limits.
17. Maintains accurate decommissioning records per regulation.
18. Decontaminates facilities, equipment, etc., per regulations.
19. Conducts general surveillance of activities involving radioactive material and/or X-ray devices including routine monitoring of all areas in which radioactive material is used or in which sources of ionizing radiation are present.
20. Implements proper sewer disposal techniques per regulation and maintains appropriate and accurate records.
21. Coordinates and documents radioactive waste disposal and storage per regulation in conjunction with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) personnel.
22. Receives transfers, inspects shipments for damage or leakage and accuracy of order, and maintains pertinent shipping records for radioactive packages.
23. Conducts due diligence surveys prior to laboratory commissioning or decommissioning and ensures accurate documentation per regulation.
The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) assists with the University's laser safety program under the discretion of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
1. Assists with inspections of laboratories and facilities within the purview of the Laser Safety Committee (LSC). 2. Helps document deficiencies identified during inspection and follows up on corrective actions. 3. Helps maintain accurate records of ongoing activities within the purview of the LSC. 4. Assists with scheduling and providing general laser safety training to University personnel. 5. Helps disable and remove lasers from the University's inventory.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and one year of related work experience  OR  Five years of relevant radiation safety training and work experience may be substituted for post-secondary education.

Threeyears of relevant professional experience working in a radiation safetyprogram, preferably in an academic research environment. Thus, the individualmust have experience working with radioactive materials and/or X-rays, or as amember of a radiation safety team. Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds. Must be able to easily access confined laboratory spaces. Mustpossess a valid driver's license. Must be eligible for employment in areasgoverned by the U.S.Patriot Act and the Public Health and BioterrorismPreparedness and Response Act of 2002, 42 CFR 73, 7 CFR 331, and 9 CFR 121.Consequently, the individual hired for this position must be able tosuccessfully complete Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation(DOJ/FBI) security risk assessment if required. Within the first two years ofemployment, the employee must successfully complete the 5-week Applied HealthPhysics course offered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) or havealready successfully completed it or a course determined to be more appropriateby the Radiation Safety Officer.

Skills:
1.Ability to interpret license and permit conditions.
2.Proficient with various radiation detection instruments and counting equipment.
3.Experience working with radioisotopes, X-ray machines, and/or Class 3b or Class4 lasers including experience with the transportation of radioactive materials.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaison with a diverseaudience of professionals.
6. Strong working knowledge of mathematics.
7. Ability to handle multiple tasks in an organized manner while carrying outtasks accurately.
8. Proficient computer skills including word processing applications (MS Officeapplications), database applications and email applications.
9. Employee may be required to enroll in the university's respiratoryprotection program and receive medical clearance to wear/use a variety ofrespiratory protection and personal protective equipment (PPE). Specifically,the individual must be able to wear/use a variety of respiratory protection andPPE for extended periods of time.
10. Demonstrated knowledge of radiation protection principles, characteristicsof ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, units of radiation dose and quantities,radiation detection instrumentation, biological hazards of exposure toradiation and pertinent regulations (including NRC regulatory requirements andstandards).
11. Employee may be required to enroll in the University's occupational healthand safety program. Assists in the preparation of the radiation safety programevaluation report which is reviewed by the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)annually.

PreferredQualifications:

Master's degree in physics; engineering; physical, chemical or biological sciences; or related field. Professional experience working with Class 3b and Class 4b lasers and/or education or certifications in laser safety.
