The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pulmonary Medicine, is hiring an Assistant Research Scientist. The position will be responsible for designing, performing, and analyzing experiments evaluating the pathogenesis and treatment of severe viral respiratory tract infections. Skills in molecular virology and animal models are essential. In addition, the scientist will work closely with the PI to produce and publish abstracts, manuscripts, grant reports and assist in the preparation of grant applications. This is a specified term position.

Duties to Include:

  • Perform experiments, simulations, or theoretical investigations.
  • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures
  • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.
  • Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.
  • May serve as co-PI on grants or proposals.
  • Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies. Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.
  • Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources.
  • May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for lab staff.

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is a national leader in pediatric medicine. Required Qualifications:
  • The position requires a PhD in a natural or health science field or discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in virology, molecular virology, reverse genetics, and studies in animal models is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with viral vectors including adenovirus, helper dependent adenovirus, and lentivirus.
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular biology is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with respiratory viruses is required.
  • Extensive experience with brightfield, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with primary human cell models.
  • Experience with coronavirus models of infection.
  • Experience with airway epithelial cell biology, including electrolyte transport.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with respiratory viruses and animal models.
  • Experience in quantitative measurement of electrolyte transport in epithelial cells.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy.
