Ast/Asc/Full Prof Fixed-Term

Position Summary

Michigan State University College of Law seeks a professor to join its legal writing program of seven highly experienced professors, including a full-time writing specialist. Writing professors typically teach two sections of legal writing each semester. However, professors may have the opportunity to teach other courses depending on interest and the law college's needs.

Writing professors participate fully in the law college. They attend faculty meetings and participate in faculty governance, may receive summer research stipends, attend conferences, and employ student evaluators and research assistants.

Legal writing at MSU College of Law is a coordinated program. Professors work from a roughly common syllabus and use the same books. Professors meet regularly and share materials. Fall semesters three-credit course meets twice a week. Within those class periods, writing professors teach objective legal writing and analysis, law-college librarians teach research, and the writing specialist offers seminars on grammar, punctuation, and style. Depending on student and professor interest, objective writing may be taught in content-specific sections.

Spring semesters two-credit course meets once a week and covers appellate advocacy, based on a program-wide appellate problem. Outside class times, the writing specialist continues to offer support in grammar, punctuation, and style.

Writing professors have a nine-month appointment.

Salary and nature of the appointment will be commensurate with credentials.
