The Violence Recovery Program and Neighborhood Trauma Team are an integral part of the BWH's Center for Community Health and Health Equity. The mission of the CCHHE is to advance systems of care and community health strategies to eliminate health disparities and elevate the health status of the communities served by BWH. The CCHHE collaborates with many hospital departments, including clinical and research areas, and works in partnership with external organizations and community-based groups in addressing the social determinants of individual and community health, including efforts to improve the health, well-being and safety of patients, employees and community members experiencing violence.

The Violence Recovery Program Behavioral Health Mentor works as part of a multidisciplinary team working on both the prevention and intervention of violence in our communities. The mentor will work with the hospital response team as well as the neighborhood trauma team. This position reports to the Clinical Program Director of Violence Intervention and Prevention Programs.

Direct Service work

• Provide strengths-based assessments with patients and family members or identified community members experiencing physical and mental injury and trauma because of community and interpersonal violence.
• Provide crisis intervention, short-term and long-term supportive accompaniment to victims of community violence and their family members.
• Develop and facilitate workshops, ongoing psychoeducational and support groups for both victims and impacted families and friends.
• Identify, assess for appropriateness, and link individuals to community resources to optimize healing-centered engagement with services.
• Work collaboratively with the advocates to ensure comprehensive continuum of care.

Neighborhood Trauma Team

• Provide behavioral health information, family engagement, and service linkage on-site and in children and families' natural environments; under the guidance of licensed Behavioral Health Professionals, provide evidence-based treatment to individuals and families.
• When appropriate, provide response services in the community after an incident of violence that may include crisis response support for impacted residents, being a compassionate presence at community meetings, and providing healing and psycho-educational groups for impacted members of the community.
• Provide support at community gatherings, funerals, memorials and any other events occurring after community violence/trauma.
• Participate in briefing calls and administrative follow-up as needed after incidents of community violence.
• Conduct outreach to other community-based partners, offering behavioral health consultation around preventing and reducing the impact of trauma and violence.

Other responsibilities

• Flexibility in meeting clients in locations in the community; home visits as appropriate.
• Confidentiality and compliance with professional ethics. Coordinates services with other departments internally at the hospital and in the community.
• Attend appropriate meetings in the hospital and community.
• Participate in after-hours/weekend on-call coverage for program. Some nights and weekends required.

• Data entry for case management and program evaluation purposes.
• Any other activities as appropriate and assigned by manager to advance the work of the program.

Qualifications

• Requires an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a human service field and one year experience OR a high school diploma/GED and 5-7 years experience working with community members who have experienced trauma and violence.
• Demonstrated commitment to Boston-area communities through community-based organizing, activism, program development and/or other lived experience.
• Bilingual Spanish/English fluency strongly preferred (speaking, reading and writing).

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

• Demonstrated knowledge of community violence issues.
• Commitment to social, racial and gender justice issues.
• Must have solid advocacy and clinical skills, excellent judgment and interpersonal skills. Must work effectively as a member of a team and collaboratively with other professionals within the hospital and community.
• Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation/training skills; ability to assimilate information and communicate with various constituents.
• Experience working with diverse groups of people (e.g. race, ethnicity, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities).
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple teams/projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfort in bridging the hospital and community settings and demonstrated success in facilitating collaborations with diverse, multi-cultural populations collaboratively to respond to the issue of domestic violence.
• Must be comfortable using computerized word processing and database programs.
