Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for setting up, controlling and monitoring all Television broadcast, cable, and satellite signals broadcasting programs to the viewing audience
  • Performs a variety of routine technical tasks for monitoring broadcast master control operations and programming services of WTIU-TV, WFIU-FM on-air programming, along with daily TV and Radio service operations.
  • Monitors Broadcast program, cable and satellite signals delivery to the viewing audience, as well as corrective action, should problems develop.
  • Participates in a variety of standard broadcast and closed-circuit operations, including set up, operation and maintenance of electronic, mechanical and optical equipment in the origination, transmission, reception, and recording of audio and video signals.
  • Focuses on operation and production engineering of WTIU/WFIU direct on-air program monitoring, The Media School (student) production, recorded productions, remote, field and post productions, instructional productions, and Media School lab and studio productions.
  • Designs, installs, and performs routine and corrective maintenance on other radio and television broadcast quality production systems.
  • Performs basic routine and corrective maintenance on broadcast operation equipment.
  • Assists maintenance engineers in installation of new broadcast equipment.
  • Operates and maintains the Television Master Control (TMC).
  • Routes broadcast signals to campus, uplinks sites, and other state destinations.
  • Assists in training of temporary and SD (Schedule Directors) workers
  • Acts as operational resource on technical operations and on questions regarding policies and procedures.
  • Reviews all recorded media from satellite and IPBS interconnection, and performs video dubs including internet files received from PBS, other Indiana PBS stations and local FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites.
General Responsibilities
  • Assembles and sets up audio and video equipment, cameras, recorders, and other equipment needed for broadcast production both in studio and on location; monitors and operates equipment during production; takes corrective action if problems develop.
  • Repairs broadcast equipment; troubleshoots problems using schematic; locates and procures any needed parts; installs part and tests repaired equipment; performs routine and corrective maintenance on equipment.
  • Monitors technical advances in field; researches and reports on possible new equipment purchases; designs, installs, and integrates new equipment; documents new equipment.
  • Operates and maintains the Television Master Control; routes broadcast signals to campuses, up-link sites, and other destinations.
  • Operates, monitors, and adjusts transmitters in compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.
  • Operates and monitors satellite receivers; performs technical evaluations of signals.
  • Consults with other broadcasting and production staff to ascertain and configure technical and equipment needs for various productions.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Broadcast Technicians.

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Preferred
  • Associate's degree in electronics, electronic telecommunications, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of television broadcast experience
Preferred
  • 1 year of experience in field production and computer-based editing

Working Conditions / Demands

Works with user workstations, video server equipment, broadcasting automation equipment, and file based digital media/streams and closed IP network systems.

This position requires the ability to work shifts during nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. This role requires occasional moving or handling of equipment weighing 10 to 50 pounds and the ability to ascend/descend ladders. The position requires manual dexterity in the set-up and operation of equipment plus the installation of cabling, connectors, and other items. The role requires concentration on multiple program streams and viewing computer screens for extended periods of time.
