Job Description
The Business Development Specialist will support the Business Development Team in helping to drive business development, marketing, events and communications support. The role will involve working with individual partners and the firm's global Business Development, Marketing & Communications, PR/Communications, and Events teams, to develop and advance strategic business development planning and related initiatives and enhance the external market profile.

The role will be supporting two key and growing practice areas, Emerging Growth and Private Equity and will be introduced to the relevant industry alignments including TMT and Energy Innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the senior business development managers in both practices and industry groups to help deliver their objectives as laid out in their business plan and to develop an in-depth understanding of the industry and practice.
  • Assist, and lead where possible, on the RFP and pitch process ensuring an accurate and timely recording of all business opportunities in the Firm's CRM system (Foundation), including pitch win/loss ratio and reasons for success/failure.
  • Using the Firm's Experience Database, ensuring that deal input information is correct and ability to manipulate and evaluate data output as required.
  • Develop and maintain marketing collateral (brochures, proposals, web content including website biographies, practice and/or industry descriptions), promotional items, experience and client contact lists, and calendar of firm and industry events.
  • Assist with the collection of accolades and the building of a precedent library for use in proposals, awards, ranking submissions, and other settings.
  • Coordinate events, sponsorships, charitable contributions, CLEs, seminars and conferences including logistics planning, and production both in-house and outside the firm, including on-site event support
  • Coordinate with the PR/Communications team to identify media opportunities, including speaking and by-lined articles; facilitate publication of articles, social media posts and other targeted industry opportunities to improve the profile and positioning of the group - both internally and externally.
  • Lead the submissions process for legal directories (Chambers and Partners, Legal 500), respective league tables and award bodies. To include coaching lawyers for directory interviews, providing feedback and reporting on rankings and awards.
  • Support in monitoring the marketplace for key opportunities, including identifying deal leads, industry initiatives, and ongoing community and / or potential client activity, the development and tracking of marketing plans, budgets, individual partner plans and targeted business development initiatives.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of new business initiatives for the practices including thought leadership, events, client seminars and / or training programs with communications, BD and other administrative teams and firmwide department
  • Work with the Firm's Creative Services and Marketing Technology teams to coordinate the production, distribution and evaluation of client alerts, newsletters and other publications, including the creation, development and maintenance of relevant mailing lists.
  • Be an active contributor in the Firm's social media programs and activities including contributing and maintaining microsites where relevant
  • Responsible for tracking business development related expenses, preparation of reports, processing department invoices and check requests, and maintaining proper documentation.
  • Conduct high quality client, market, sector and decision-maker research and analysis as required.
  • Help share information with and build relationships with colleagues across the Firm to ensure an integrated industry and practice offering.
  • Assist with other related duties as assigned

Education & Experience
  • 3-5 years in professional services or related role
  • Client relationship management experience preferred
  • Event planning and event execution experience required
  • Bachelor degree required; degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Hospitality or Business preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, InterAction; familiarity in working with any desktop publishing software or other CRM systems would be a plus.


Physical Activity/Other Miscellaneous
  • Flexibility to work beyond standard business hours as needed
  • Ability to travel to other Shearman & Sterling North American offices in relation to certain projects.
