Job Description

Summary

Under general supervision collects, processes, and analyzes environmental and petro-chemical samples including water and hydrocarbons; organizes and conducts laboratory operations; operates and maintains lab analytical equipment; organizes and manages environmental and hydrocarbon lab data and Quality records.

Job Responsibilities (but are not limited to)

  • Performs chemical, petro-fuels, environmental and/or bacteriological analyses of water samples in a timely manner according to quality control procedures and plans.
  • Records analytical data in a timely manner in the LIMS (Lab Information Management System), on client reports and in associated instrument software records.
  • Operates, setup and maintains maintenance on laboratory instrumentation such as but NOT limit to: Spectrophotometer, Conductivity meter, Turbidity meter, Ion Chromatograph, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-OES, Gas Chromatography (GC), Sulfur Analyzer by UV Fluorescence, Mercury Analyzer, Oil and Grease Analyzer, Ammonia Analyzer, pH meter, Coulometric Karl Fisher, Auto sampler, Micro-pipette, Vacuum pump, volumetric glassware, UV light meter, Incubator, Analytical Balance, Thermometer, Computer, Microscope, Specialty label printers, and water purifier.
  • Prepares bacteriological media and chemical solutions as well as standardization of all solutions when needed.
  • Organizes, monitors inventory and places orders to management necessary to maintain lab supplies.
  • Maintains required State proficiency certification for microbiological testing, chemical testing techniques, and instrumentation associated with the accredited fields of analysis in the lab.
  • Adheres to and promotes laboratory safety policies.
  • Supports the department during emergency situations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned and general upkeep and housekeeping of the Laboratory.
  • Assist in all other laboratory assignments and training. Documents all activities and recordkeeping accordingly to SOP's.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in laboratory science, chemistry, biology, hydrology, environmental science, or related field. Science degree is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Associate degree from an accredited college in laboratory science, chemistry, biology, hydrology, environmental science, or related field and two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a Laboratory performing rudimentary analysis preferred without degree.
  • Science degree is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to work with all chemicals, petrochemicals petroleum, Liquid petroleum gases, Natural gases.
  • Position requires incumbent to work weekends, holiday or work a rotating shift, to meet business commitments.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you will be regularly required to stand; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and test or smell; frequently required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms; required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to differentiate between colors accurately by sight.
  • Must demonstrate initial capability for all fields of testing for which the laboratory is accredited within two (2) months of hired date by successfully analyzing quality control samples, blind samples or other demonstration as referenced in the method.
  • On- going proficiency must be maintained and demonstrated for the laboratory annually by performing an acceptable proficiency test for each field of testing. Technicians are expected to consistently meet the quality control requirements of the method, the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, and the TX Department of Health Accrediting body for: Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) for water.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of lab analytical equipment, including computer interfaces, to conduct analysis of Hydrocarbon and water samples in the field or lab.
  • Knowledge of lab operations and physical, chemical, and biological risks, and safety measures.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and developing efficient and effective solutions.
  • Skill in the use of computers, technology, and lab equipment.
  • Skill in technical customer service principles and practices.
  • Ability to identify and address environmental conditions apt to effect integrity or quality of samples and quality assurance manuals.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems in the maintenance, development, implementation and quality assurance or analytical equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and follow complex written and oral instructions and make legible handwritten entries on labels and laboratory records.
  • Ability to interpret maps
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
