Description:

The Clinical Director ensures an effective departmental structure, inclusive decision-making, creative and supportive personnel policies, professional models of care that promote excellent patient services, collegial interdisciplinary relationships and professional development opportunities for nursing staff. S/he provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise within their service area(s) in Dubuque. The Clinical Director facilitates interactive management and the development of strong relationships among nursing personnel and with others throughout the organization and the community. S/he carries out the mission, vision, plans, and standards of the nursing organization and of MercyOne as a whole.

The Clinical Director is accountable for the environment in which clinical nursing and addiction consoling is practiced in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. S/he enhances the practice environment, consistent with Magnet hospital criteria, encouraging staff accountability for their own practice, and recruiting and retaining employees with the appropriate values, experience, education and background. The Clinical Director is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the defined service area(s) and collaborates with the nurse executive and others in organizational planning, innovation and evaluation.

  • Our department is comprised of nurses and CNA/unit secretaries along with our clinical leader and stroke/trauma/pediatric coordinator. We work closely with the ED physicians, pharmacy, case management, laboratory, radiology, consulting physicians, and EMS. We are the entry way into the hospital for many of our patients.
  • We have 15 rooms and 16 beds in our department, plus a specialty room for our behavioral health patients and a decontamination room.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary from 1:1 to 1:5 depending on acuity.
  • Nurses work 12-hour shifts and include every third weekend and every third holiday.
    • Day shift: 0600-1830
    • Evening shift: 0800-2030; 1000-2230; 1200-0030; 1500-0330
    • Night shift: 1800-0630
  • The ED maintains accreditation as a Trauma Center (Level III in Iowa; Level II in Illinois), an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP), Primary Stroke Center, and Senior ED.
  • We see a variety of patients from newborn to the very elderly; trauma, cardiac, psych, peds, OB/GYN, ENT, etc.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • The Clinical Director must hold an active license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa. S/he should be prepared with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing. A master's degree in nursing is recommended, as is certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization in nursing administration and an appropriate specialty area.
  • The Clinical Director will have clinical nursing experience and experience in a nursing administrative/leadership role.
  • S/he is a member of an appropriate professional nursing organization and seeks continuing education and professional development opportunities consistent with the annual learning plan.
