GENERAL SUMMARY:
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is the clinical expert and leader for a specific nursing practice specialty. Through their interactions, the CNS promotes excellence in nursing practice by demonstrating expert nursing care to patients, serving as clinical resource to staff, providing education to advance the practice of the nursing specialty, and participating in quality and performance improvement activities. The CNS improves nursing practice by evaluating patient outcomes and standards of care for the patients served. The CNS is accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies.
The CNS and the Nurse Manager/Director collaborate to lead the nursing clinical practice specialty and work to improve and strengthen the systems that support quality patient care.

The clinical nurse specialist will cover the CVC and OSC.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Promotes excellence in nursing practice by delivering expert nursing care to patients and serving as a clinical resource to staff nurses.
•Demonstrates the components of professional nursing practice: clinical practice, patient advocacy, consultation, collaboration, leadership, education, performance improvement and research.
•Establishes relationships that promote the professional development of clinical nurses.
•Provides consultation to clinical nurses on the assessment, planning and evaluation of nursing care.
•Makes direct observations of the delivery of nursing care, offers guidance to clinical nurses, especially for complex and difficult problems.
•Assists clinical nurses to systematically evaluate their own practice and identify pertinent problems for review.
•Improves nursing practice by evaluating patient outcomes in the specific patient population.
•Promotes the ongoing development of the knowledge base for evidenced based clinical practice.
•Plans, implements and evaluates changes in nursing practice.
•Provides leadership in the development of standards of practice.
•Participates in Nursing Department and hospital committees.
•Collaborates with Nurse Manager and clinical nurses to determine needs for educational programs.
•Participates in the development of educational strategies and programs to assist nursing staff to meet performance expectations and standards of practice.
•Makes recommendations for the orientation of new staff members and participates in the orientation program where needed.
•Participates in hospital-wide educational programming and training where needed.
•Evaluates own clinical practice.
•Identifies pertinent patient care issues for investigation.
•Incorporates current literature and research findings into nursing practice.
•Supports and encourages nurses in clinical curiosity, inquiry and evidenced-based practice changes.
•Participates in professional, community and other organizations that promote the health of the population served.
•Collaborates with other disciplines to provide comprehensive care across the continuum.
•Assists Nurse Manager to identify priorities for educational and quality/performance improvement activities.
•Engages clinical staff in unit-based educational and quality/performance improvement activities.
•Develops community educational programs for the community and outreach programs with outpatient agencies and extended care facilities as needed.
•Serves as a clinical and educational resource person for specialty needs throughout the organization.
•Develops and maintains educational/quality reports as required by the department or hospital.
•Communicates effectively.
•Maintains a flexible schedule that is in accordance with MNA collective bargaining agreement in order to meet the needs of staff on all shifts, including weekends.

Qualifications
Job Knowledge and Skills
-Demonstrated skills at the level of an advanced practice nurse in leadership, communication, collaboration, mentoring, and change as evidenced by portfolio, recommendation letters, references, interview, and demonstration.
-Demonstrated ability at the level of an advanced practice nurse to utilize evidence to develop, teach, guide, and implement practice standards and policies.

Education and Experience
-Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
-Master's degree in Nursing required
-Evidence of professional development and continuing education.
-Minimum 5 years PACU experience required
-Cardiovascular and/or Interventional Radiology Procedural experience preferred.

Training,Certifications and/or Registrations
-Current MA RN License
-CPR required
-CNS Advanced Practice
-Certification or certification in area of nursing specialty required.
