Communications Associate
The AI-X Foundry, an endeavor by the Johns Hopkins Whiting School for Engineering, is currently recruiting for a Communications Associate to propel the mission of the institute to become a driving force for artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency to oversee and execute strategic projects from conception to reality. They will also be proficient in defining and reporting on metrics relating to ROI.

The Communications Associate will plan, design, implement and manage communications, marketing and public affairs strategy and efforts to achieve defined goals. Responsible for development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic and tactical communication plan. Provide consultation and recommendation related to the development of communication media for major publications and/or significant initiatives/programs. Responsible for the writing and production of a wide variety of communication vehicles, including marketing and promotion materials and publications.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and execute communications strategies that position the institute as a premier thought leader and nationally recognized center of excellence by working closely with its leadership and other personnel at the Whiting School of Engineering, the Applied Physics Lab, and the School of Medicine.
  • Provide thought-leadership on emerging trends in communications and design.
  • Plan and support communications to foster national and local partnerships and strategic collaborations.
  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor, crafting clear messages and selecting appropriate channels, as needed.
  • Provide consultation and recommendation related to the development of communication for major publications and/or significant initiatives/programs - including pitches and PR efforts.
  • Provide consultation and recommendation for paid and organic media and communications efforts.
  • Ensure all public statements and releases are aligned with strategic initiatives and comply with any contractual obligations.
  • Act individually and with marketing teams and vendors to craft captivating content for external and internal audiences, including, but not limited to: articles, graphics, presentations, marketing materials, displays, events, digital media, newsletters, and podcasts.
  • Distribute said content via social media, newsletters, marketing efforts, publications, press releases, the AI-X website and more.
  • Responsible for promoting visibility of the organization's faculty, programs,students through a variety of approaches both web and print and internal and external nature.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in multiple communication vehicles.
  • Work with faculty and department leadership to target and market potential research and news stories.
  • Publicize the institute's flagship projects and research findings for wide impact and influence across mainstream and trade media.
  • Provide editorial oversight and review of communications vehicles for area.
  • Work with senior leadership and the WSE marketing and communicationsdepartment to develop an annual budget and will be responsible for managing and reporting on budget.
  • Oversee management of budgets, vendors, selection of vendors etc. as needed.
  • Create communications calendar by identifying programs, events or research for promotions with natural tie-in opportunities. Conduct outreach and maintain relationships with local, regional and national media outlets
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining organization web and social strategy and goals.
  • Proactively work with faculty, students and staff on developing, writing and designing content for web and other platforms including text, audio and video.
  • Maintain and update the AI-X WordPress website.
  • Manage the production of materials including selection of materials, including selection and layout of artwork, graphics, pictures, and illustrations.
  • May coordinate, direct, and review the work of communications staff.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external mailing lists by segment (academia,government, industry) in coordination with CRM.
  • Other duties as assigned


Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work with peers within WSE and central communications to align strategy with overall school and university goals, and achieve consistency of voice, message and in adherence with all brand, use of name, and messaging guidelines.
  • Manages RFP process when hiring vendors, oversees all university purchasing and ensures all travel guidelines and other university policies are adhered to.
  • Oversees hiring of and supervision staff and/or student workers in support of department efforts.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four (4) years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to translate complex research or scientific data into materials for lay audiences.
  • Proficient in CRM software, CMS platforms (WordPress), Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Analytics, Social media and digital marketing platforms.
  • Project management experience. Experience in a supervisory role.
  • Samples of writing, project management, strategic plans strongly encouraged.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships and identify, assess, and meet diverse client needs.
  • Ability to organize workflow, prioritize and manage multiple projects with minimal direction, meet deadlines, think critically and creatively, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to translate complex research or scientific data into materials for lay audiences.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience communicating with, and partnering with industry, government and federal agencies preferred.


Classified Title: Communications Associate
Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PD
Starting Salary Range: $59,870 - $82,250 annually (commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
