Communications Coordinator - School of Integrative Biology

Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of the School of Integrative Biology (SIB) or the Director's Designate, the Communications Coordinator will work collaboratively with the school and department administrators, faculty, and professional staff to craft and implement a marketing plan targeting several distinct stakeholder groups. This plan will include the creation of a communications set disseminated via a variety of digital, print, and physical media to advance the strategic and programmatic interests of the School and associated Departments (Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior; Entomology, and Plant Biology).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Research, write, compose, and edit announcements, press releases, and larger articles that convey the work and mission of the School of Integrative Biology (SIB) to engage multiple stakeholders through the dissemination of a variety of print and electronic media, including social media.
  • With administrative oversight and assistance from technical specialists (freelance writers, designers, artists, photographers, printers, etc.), develop and produce print publications including the SIB magazine and newsletters, departmental newsletters, program invitations/brochures, holiday cards, etc. May cooperate and work with staff of other agencies on joint publications.
  • Engage the current School community, alumni, and donors through the creation and coordination of web and social media content that creates a sense of belonging in the School's students, faculty, and staff through effective communication of research, curriculum, and outreach programs. Assure compliance with pertinent communications regulations, policies, and branding standards for web and print media. Facilitate updates of time sensitive web content (calendar items, announcements, news articles, job postings, etc.) either by direct action or by coordination with those responsible for specific content.
  • Through both promotion of and attendance at community events, produce and/or coordinate production of photo and video content for such events, including convocation, award ceremonies, Kick-off events, etc. Maintain records associated with all aspects of the School and Departmental communications activity through a digital content repository.
  • Assist with School campaigns on Science Communication, including serving a guest presenter on effective communication strategies.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
  • One year of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media.
  • Demonstrated experience creating communications and or marketing materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Project management experience in developing a plan and adhering to established goals, budget, timeline.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Self-starter with ability to plan and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with a variety of individuals (both internal and external) in an academic setting.
  • Ability to do graphic design, photography/videography skills, and web design.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee several projects at once, setting and adjusting work priorities to meet production deadlines.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5006 - Public Information Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The starting salary for this position is $55,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week). Sponsorship for Work authorization is not available for this position.
