Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of appointment; industry or postdoctoral experience is viewed positively. Candidates should enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses and be committed to teaching engineering in an undergraduate liberal arts context.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing and teaching upper-level courses in Computer Engineering and will share in teaching courses in the Engineering core, including Computer Science and Physics. There are also opportunities to teach courses at various levels that fulfill the College's general education requirements. The normal teaching load is six lecture sections per year, split between the main Fall and Winter terms and sometimes our focused one-month Spring term.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will have a significant role in shaping our programs in computer and electrical engineering as we seek ABET accreditation. Experience with the accreditation process would be valuable, especially for candidates of higher rank. This person will be actively involved in maintaining the quality and relevance of the program's curricular offerings and in developing structures to support student success from the classroom to career placement. The successful candidate will be a key figure in developing internship and/or coop opportunities with regional business partners (in collaboration with the Center for College and Community Engagement). All tenure-track faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda, and undergraduate involvement is highly valued. Tenure-track faculty are also expected to contribute service to the college through committee work and other activities, and service to the public and to the scientific community is also valued.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING:

The successful applicant will become part of a department of three tenure-track faculty in active collaboration with faculty from the department of Math and Computer Science. We offer majors in Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Engineering, and soon Electrical Engineering. The College also offers majors in Computer Science and Mathematics. The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; student development in a residential setting; student projects and research; ethical and safe practices; and interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international education. Salary, benefits, and support for professional development are competitive.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applicants need to submit the following materials in Microsoft Word or PDF format (single file preferred): letter of application, C.V., transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, a description of research directions suitable for an undergraduate institution, and names and contact information of three references. These application materials should at some point address the candidate's ideas for industry partnerships, possibilities for contributing courses to the college's Core curriculum for non-majors, and how their experience prepares them to support a diverse community of learners. Please send the application packet as an email attachment to: Alma College Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (provost@alma.edu). Letters of recommendation will be solicited from selected applicants later in the process. Review of applications will begin on October 13, 2023.
