Job Summary/Basic Function:
To supervise crews performing construction and repair activities of buildings, concrete bridges, roadways and/or related facilities; perform related work.
Department Overview:
Facilities Operations and Maintenance supports the university's strategic mission by professionally maintaining safe, functional and attractive facilities and grounds, while also providing quality support services to the campus community.
Level Scope:
Regularly works on tasks that are varied and complex. Applies full range of specialized skills and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; may serve as lead; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; originality and ingenuity are often required to help establish procedures in functional area; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Functions:
Administrative:

  • Reviews construction project plans and blueprints and provides recommendations.
  • Consults with project engineers, supervisors, and others to identify problems with proposed projects.
  • Develops crew work schedules.
  • Supervises crews involved in building construction, repair and remodeling.
  • Arranges for crew, materials, and equipment mobilization as necessary.
    Performs on-site inspections of projects to evaluate progress, compliance with plans, and quality of construction.
  • Prepares work progress reports and equipment maintenance records.
Construction:
  • Builds, repairs and remodels structures, walls, ceilings, floors, panels, doors, windows and siding.
  • Places and finishes new concrete.
  • Lays tile and repairs concrete floors, sidewalks and other structures.
  • Uses and Repairs hand and power tools.
  • Operates and performs minor maintenance and repairs on trucks, bulldozers, graders, cement mixers and welders.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction and repair of buildings or other structures.
  • Communication skills to convey information to others effectively.
  • Ability to successfully organize, plan and prioritize work.
Minimum Qualifications:
Good knowledge of:
  • Building construction and repair methods, materials, and equipment.
  • State and local building codes.
Experience:
  • Supervising crews involved in construction and repair of buildings.
  • Using hand and power tools to construct and repair building structures.
  • Performing minor maintenance on construction vehicles and equipment.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and construction specifications.
Valid driver's license.
