Job Description

Position Overview:

Counsel - Special Investigations will perform investigations of alleged violations of law and/or GM policy (e.g., fraud, IP theft, embezzlement, conflicts of interest, collusion, kickbacks, bribery, FCPA violations and records falsification) or other projects at the request of management. They will provide counsel on a broad range of compliance matters.

Subject Matter Requirements:

  • Develop investigative plans and investigate allegations of misconduct
  • Execute and document work in accordance with professional standards
  • Communicate investigation results clearly and timely to all constituencies
  • Work cross functionally with Audit, Security, HR, and other constituencies
  • Maintain technical competency and understand the business
  • Supervise assigned staff and/or resources
  • Promote teamwork and supporting the overall objectives of Legal department

Additional Job Description

Qualifications & Experience:

Investigation Related:
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience at a major law firm or in-house, or prior prosecutorial experience
  • Perform investigations of alleged fraud and/or misconduct at the direction of SI Leadership.
  • Identify and develop sources of information relative to the subject of the investigation
  • Conduct effective informational and interrogatory interviews
  • Evaluate systems of internal control and related procedures
  • Recommend corrections/enhancements to control deficiencies noted during investigations
  • Maintain effective communication with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information is maintained
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, occasionally with minimal advance notice
Compliance Related:
  • As a member of the Company's compliance team, help build and maintain an effective compliance program
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations as well as the Company's internal policies
  • Support development and delivery of employee compliance training programs and policies
People Related:
  • Be "self-starting", independent and demonstrate strong leadership skills
  • Counsel/lead the investigation team so that the defined objectives are met timely, and staff are utilized effectively
  • Maintain open, honest, and timely communication with personnel involved in investigations/projects; demonstrate high level verbal and written communication skills
  • Assess team members against established performance & leadership criteria; provide valuable feedback & address performance issues; provide timely performance appraisals
Strategy Related:
  • Continually assess strategies for current and future investigations, identify real benefits of efforts and recognize business impact on cost/budget
  • Develop a strong understanding of GM operations worldwide to include cultural understanding
  • Recommend changes in investigative process to improve efficiency/ effectiveness while maintaining the highest quality standards

Education Requirements:
  • Law degree from an accredited college or university
  • Admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction in the United States and, if not admitted in Michigan, the ability to qualify for in-house counsel status in Michigan
  • Bilingual (Spanish) - highly desired
