Massachusetts General Hospital has initiated a broad effort to coordinate the multiple data and digital health projects across the institutions in order to support continued digital health growth, improve patient experience and outcomes, streamline operational efficiencies, and enhance data capture and analytics. This involves the implementation of expert developed treatment algorithms, personalized patient profiles, and fundamental workflow redesign to create care plans that are executed remotely through non-licensed Patient Health Navigators supported by licensed personnel. The ultimate intent is to attack disease through prevention with state-of-the-art innovation, collaboration and the desire to do "right" and create a sustainable, long-term healthcare model.

The National Heart Lung and Blood institute from the National institutes of Health (NIH) has funded a research project in this space to develop a framework to stratify patient cohorts for clinical management. The goal of this project is to improve healthcare delivery.

The Analyst will support this project. After his/her initial training, he/she will be embedded with the multi-disciplinary team. This arrangement will allow the analyst to develop a strong relationship with and function as a member of the research team on a day-to-day basis, while also providing him/her support from the broader analytical community including training, collegial support/guidance, and career development activities. The analyst will have access to an extraordinary range of healthcare data including medical and pharmacy claims, enrollment, EMR, scheduling, referral and laboratory results. This role requires working with multiple sources of healthcare data (ex: claims, financial, and clinical data) to meet both reporting requirements and support new initiatives. The analyst will be expected to develop an understanding of health-care data structures as well as the ability to translate specifications into programming logic. The analyst will be expected to work on new and existing projects, function independently within a fast-paced environment, work on several different projects/tasks concurrently. Effectively communicating issues and results is critical to being successful in this position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifying and risk stratifying the cohort(s) who might benefit most from the intervention programs.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret healthcare data (ambulatory, inpatient, billing, etc); coordinate with appropriate team member(s) to develop quality of care measurements and tools. 'Manage data collection processes.
  • Identify trends and patterns of practice.
  • Evaluate the quality of data submitted by health care providers and other entities utilizing database management tools (e.g. Excel, Access, Pivot Tables, Sequel) Communicate results of data quality analyses to data submitters. Collaborate with data submitters to resolve data quality issues.
  • Assisting with ongoing efforts to track, evaluate, and report on the impact of programs using multiple data sources.
  • Developing data collection systems and other strategies that optimize data quality. Acquires data from primary or secondary data sources and maintains databases/data systems in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Cleaning data, and reviewing computer reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct code problems.
  • Organize databases, transform, prepare/transform data for subsequent data processing, statistical analysis and display.
  • Develop data solutions that can be made reusable, automated and standardized for data management and report generation.
  • Developing metrics that measure programmatic success and outcomes.
  • Forecasting/Projecting the impact of proposed new models
  • Improving visualization of reports using existing tools.
  • Presenting analytical findings in a variety of formats (reports, PowerPoint, graphs, figures, tables) formulating recommendations, and effectively presenting results to non-analytic audiences.
  • Working with a variety of tools (ex: SQL, Excel, Tableau, etc.) to access data, write queries, developing programming logic, running reports, manipulate, and analyzing large datasets to meet the needs of the stakeholders.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary research team members

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent oral, written communication and problem-solving skills required.
  • Strong ability to work independently and within team setting to achieve outcomes
  • A general understanding of managed care organizations, healthcare financial analysis, governmental reimbursement methodologies, health care plan design, and medical claims payment process is preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, database management (Access) and spreadsheet (Excel) utilization skills required with strong orientation to detail.
  • Experience with analytics reporting and data interpretation/presentation in healthcare or actuarial environment. Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of SQL and data-base design
  • Experience with extracting data and reports from at least one electronic health record system, preferably EPIC, POLR and Insight would be preferred but not essential.
  • Advanced Excel skills including the use of conditional formatting, formulas, pivot tables and charts.
  • Ability to effectively present information to leadership and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret health care journals, IS manuals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with only limited standardization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and collaborate with team members.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and able to take initiative.
  • Confident working independently.
  • Bachelor's degree required. Preferred degree in mathematics, computer science, health sciences, healthcare informatics, information systems, statistics, or business preferred from an accredited college.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in analytics and reporting in healthcare.
