General Summary of Position:

The Department of Biomedical & Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) seeks a visionary leader in education, research, and innovative partnerships for the position of department chair. The new chair will lead the department's future growth in interdisciplinary education and research, faculty and staff hiring, expansion of undergraduate and graduate educational and clinical programs, and advancing the national and global reputation of the department. Candidates with a strong record of federal funding and higher education leadership are of particular interest. The appointment is expected to be at the level of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.

The Department of Biomedical & Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) is housed within the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences (ZCHS), a dynamic and growing college that prepares scientists and professionals in a wide range of health-focused disciplines. The department currently has 22 faculty and 5 full-time staff members, The chair will guide faculty hiring, support and expand departmental research and educational programs, and advance interdisciplinary education and research. The chair will also contribute to teaching in the department, and broaden the vibrant clinical and community partnerships that enhance students' hands-on professional training and educational experiences. The new chair will advise on the ongoing renovation of departmental facilities to produce state-of-the-art instructional space and advance research laboratories.

The chair's primary mission is to: promote student success; recruit and retain highly qualified faculty; and guide department growth in new strategic areas. An ambitious expansion of the departmental research enterprise is a key goal for the new chair, as the University moves towards an R1 status as a research institution. The chair will work with the faculty to expand extramural funding, promote graduate and undergraduate research, maximize the impact of educational programs, and increase academic-industry partnerships. The chair will work with all department chairs in the College and demonstrate a collaborative team approach to leadership and interdisciplinary program development. The chair and department are supported by an associate chair, undergraduate and graduate program directors and clinical coordinators, a team of biomedical laboratory specialists, and an administrative assistant. The staffing model for the department enables the chair to focus on research endeavors, while providing strong leadership for the department.

The BNS department is responsible for providing core science instruction for all undergraduate majors in the college. A vibrant team of research-focused, teaching-focused, and clinical-focused educators are actively engaged with students through innovative and cutting-edge health sciences education, including experiential and interprofessional education, and hands-on laboratory training.

The BNS department offers undergraduate degrees in applied biomedical sciences (ABS), nutritional science (NS), and pharmaceutical sciences (PS), which include two nationally accredited programs: Medical Laboratory Sciences and Dietetics (NS). BNS offers graduate degrees in ABS (MS) and PharmSci MS and PhD. Faculty in BNS also participate in an interdisciplinary master's in public health (MPH) program focusing on Dietetics, as well as graduate programs in biomedical engineering & biotechnology (MS/PhD) and public health (ScD, focusing on epidemiology).

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Doctoral degree in any biomedical or health-related field. MLS(ASCP)CM certification desirable
  • Strong track record in externally funded research
  • Substantial publication record
  • Demonstrated excellence in mentoring, teaching, and service
  • Experience with undergraduate, graduate, and accredited programs, with the ability to develop, implement, and evaluate curricula
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups and interdisciplinary teams
  • Previous rank of associate or full professor with tenure
  • Experience in fostering partnerships within the university and with outside partners, such as industry-based research
  • Additional Considerations:

  • Evidence of excellence in leadership roles and interpersonal skills, including several years of experience in a high-level leadership role (i.e., chair, assistant) in a 4-year research institution
  • Experience in a prior formal leadership role and ability to successfully collaborate with the faculty, the dean, and upper administration
  • Experience recruiting faculty with strong research agendas and mentoring them through the tenure process
