General Description

As a significant contributor in this business segment, Gibbs & Cox is seeking an engineering department manager who can attract, manage and retain talent, develop, monitor and continuously improve departmental processes and procedures, and provide functional management of hardware and software engineers in a strong matrix organization. The ideal candidate shall be able to provide team leadership or individual contributor work as needed on projects of significant complexity or that are essential to business goals.

General Duties

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with subject matter experts to:
  • Drive technical initiatives in sensor processing and control, device actuation, system diagnostics and monitoring.
  • Integrate embedded systems into the autonomy software stack.
  • Develop and implement monitoring, diagnosis, and prognosis applications for vessel hull, machinery, and electrical systems.
  • Developing and tracking performance metrics
  • Performing or evaluating planning and estimating
  • Validating estimation and productivity models
  • Identifying personnel shortfalls and providing forecasting of need
  • Interfacing with corporate support activities in Human Resources, Information Technology and others as necessary to help personnel
  • Proving guidance and mentorship through all phases of software development life cycle including development, unit testing and reviews
  • Establish processes and tools to migrate to a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment
  • Working closely with geographically dispersed teams and strategic partners in a timely, responsible and respectful manner
  • Owing team tasks including hiring, goal planning, progress tracking, mentoring, reviewing employee performance, team status reporting etc.
  • Mentorship and training of junior software personnel on tools, techniques and processes
  • Development of software for automation and autonomy in a MS Windows/Linux environment deployed in a secured, containerized or virtualized server environment

Interface with PLC based automation and industrial controls

Minimum Requirements
  • BS or Advanced Degree in hardware or software engineering discipline. 5-8 years' experience as a developer, 5+ years in a management or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge of both hardware and software development processes
  • Willingness to travel offshore or internationally to provide support, testing, and integration with hardware.
  • Strong oral and written communication and proven analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Outstanding time management skills, demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team to deliver results.
  • Demonstrated record of shipping multiple products on time and budget
  • Experience with implementation of hardware-intensive, near-real-time software
  • Experience with highly-complex system of systems development projects
  • US Citizenship along with an Active US Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.

Desired Qualification
  • Embedded software, or Control systems, mechanical, or electrical engineer with coding experience preferred
  • Familiarity with high speed data buses such as CAN, PROFIBUS, and MODBUS.
  • Experience leading technical volumes or sections of proposals.
  • Record of published works
  • Familiarity with DOD, CMM(I), IEEE 12207, SAFe or Agile process models

Security Requirements

Applicant will be subject to a security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the US Government. In addition to the security clearance, this position may require an additional background screening for base access.
