Job Description:

Caterpillar's largest prime product manufacturing facility of mining products in the United States is located in Decatur, IL. This facility also serves as one of our product development hubs. In this role as an Engineering Manager, your primary work location will be Decatur, IL and you will report to the RIOP Wheeled Product Engineering Light Fabs Division Engineering Manager, where you will be primarily responsible for providing supervision and technical direction for an engineering team that is engaged in the design and development of light fabrication components and systems used on our Wheeled Mining Products that accomplish product maintenance, production support and new product introduction objectives. As a member of the Wheeled Products Engineering team, you will need to have a growth mindset, promote continuous improvement, and help build a defect-free culture. What you will do:

  • Set strategy at the section level in alignment with Resource Industries Operations & Products (RIOP) Division priorities and objectives. The section would solve problems for one or more technology, component, product, or process.
  • Project scope will vary from a moderate technical focus to a broader, multi-systems focus, and will require incumbent to broaden business understanding. Challenges include increased competitive pressure, increasing project complexity and customer demands.
  • Draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis & extraction, failure resolution & prevention, and requirements management is required; as well as, ever increasing skill in technical project management, development of product, internal and external requirements management, and cost-value management.
  • Draw upon knowledge of more than one engineering function, technology, component, system, product, or process is required.
  • Continually increase understanding of product technology and process and the customers' business and needs.
  • Make decisions, this position will work with immediate work group or project team, division/business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and the market, typically impacting one or more product(s), process(es), or factory(ies).
  • Decisions may impact an entire product, process or factory and may affect warranty, sales, customer perception, and could have effect of evolutionary change to technology and its application in products or processes at Caterpillar through technology and core competency.
  • Primary accountability for operating expense budget.
What you will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience.
Top Candidates will also have:
  • Experience in light fabrications component design and system development
  • Caterpillar product application knowledge
  • Off Highway and/or Large Mining Trucks product experience
  • Experience working with Caterpillar dealers and/or customers
  • Light fabrication component manufacturing process knowledge
  • Caterpillar NPI/CPI Process knowledge and experience
  • Cost reduction and design simplification experience
  • Lean product and process development knowledge and experience
  • Experience in virtual product development and analysis
  • Product validation process knowledge
  • APQP and supplier collaboration process knowledge
  • Assembly process knowledge
  • Experience with Caterpillar PLM systems
  • Technical/personnel leadership experience
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
  • Experience leading teams and collaborating across international time zones
  • Excellent decision-making, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Additional Information:

The primary location for this position is Decatur, IL.

Domestic relocation assistance is available.
