IFR is an independent, nonprofit, academic organization, whose mission is to transform individuals and communities through experiential education and field research. The IFR Executive Director manages the organization - the programs, personnel, finances, and communications. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Governors (8 members) and is guided by the Academic Board. (19 members)

RESPONSIBILITIES
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: 40%

  • Lead, inspire, and mentor staff in the vision and goals of IFR; hire, supervise, evaluate, and motivate staff; provide for staff changes when necessary.
  • Develop and refine policies, procedures, and benefit packages as a remote first organization; ensure all are consistently implemented and improved.
  • Working with the Board of Governors, create and implement a Strategic Plan to fully realize IFR's mission; supply the Board with complete, accurate and timely reports and data required for informed decision making; proactively bring recommendations to the Board about objectives, policies and long-term strategy.
  • Meet with the Board of Governors quarterly to discuss target metrics, strategy, and set goals.
  • Develop collaborations and partnerships with groups whose missions overlap with and advance the IFR's mission, goals and strategies, including: professional societies, university administrations, government officials, corporate and community leaders.
  • Identify and help recruit new Board members whose talents, interests, and commitment will advance the IFR's mission and programs.
  • Uphold the IFR's commitment to creating a work environment and culture with equitable and inclusive practices and encourages retention of diverse and qualified staff.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT/ENROLLMENT: 20%

  • Collaborate with the IFR's Enrollment Manager and Director of Operations in the overall student enrollment process including applications, admissions, and travel logistics.
  • Support and collaborate with the IFR's Director of Operations to identify, recruit, onboard, and launch experiential education programs.
  • Liaise with IFR's Academic Board Chair for program approvals and risk mitigation.
  • Keep informed of challenges, progress, activities and emerging trends in the field, along with offering recommendations and solutions as appropriate.

FUNDRAISING/FINANCIAL OPERATIONS: 20%

  • Work with the Boards to drive annual fundraising, grants, and scholarship campaign solicitations; set high expectations for increased financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals, governments and other philanthropic sources; strengthen fundraising systems, workflows and donor recognition.
  • Ensure that the organization's finances are responsibly managed, strong controls are in place, and financial reports and other documents are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Determine overarching budget models for field schools, as well as IFR overhead.

MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS: 20%

  • Provide forthright, timely communication, both verbal and written, to the IFR Board of Governors, IFR Academic Board, students, parents of students, and field school principal investigators (PIs).
  • Oversee the system for emergency communications with field programs and act as a primary contact for the IFR hotline during field operations.
  • Direct and oversee media content in order to best present IFR publicly. Advocate publicly for the organization; serve as media spokesperson for the organization when appropriate.
  • Manage the IFR's reputation as an exceptional institution among national and international audiences, particularly members of the academic community and professional archaeological societies.
  • Ensure internal and external communications are accessible and inclusive of a diverse population.

SUCCESS TARGETS

  • Scale IFR enrollment up to pre-pandemic levels by Summer 2024.
  • Strategize and implement ways to increase the number of field opportunities and students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience required, PhD preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading a team and/or organization.
  • Experience creating and overseeing budgets, fundraising and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with a remote based team, across multiple time zones and locations.
  • Active listener and strategist with the ability to analyze disparate information and formulate a sound, well-organized plan; comfortable and willing to give and accept guidance from many sources.
  • Ability to work without supervision, prioritize tasks appropriately; self-motivated, proactive and solution-oriented with a friendly, confident demeanor.
  • Experience studying abroad/away or traveled extensively.
  • Proficient using MS Office, Google Suite, and Dropbox. Familiarity with a CRM such as Salesforce, ACT, or similar.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Annual salary: $120,000 - $130,000, based on experience and qualifications.
