Expectations: As External Communications Manager/Senior Manager, you proactively seek out ways to engage, inspire and inform our stakeholders, helping build and protect VCA's reputation. You will join the Corporate Affairs team, a group of passionate storytellers who understand the latest trends and use insights to inform timely and effective communications strategies.

You will work cross-functionally with other Departments and support the larger VCA hospital network and needs of the Field to develop and execute compelling earned media strategies, thoughtfully connecting VCA priorities to the news cycle and external trends.

You have a strong understanding of the evolving media landscape - including nuances between national and local newsrooms. You have a passion for telling great stories and finding the data underpinning them, and you're able to develop newsworthy pitches to secure coverage across a range of media platforms.

You are a trusted thought partner, asking tough questions and offering perspective from a journalist's point of view. You learn from data and apply insights to evolve and pivot campaigns as needed.

Key Areas of Accountability:

  • Develop and lead key earned media strategies, supporting the VCA Field, managing inbound media requests and working with partners across the VCA network to respond, as needed

  • Create strategic storytelling campaigns that highlight VCA news in key U.S. markets in partnership with the Field

  • Manage local, regional, trade and select national media outreach with guidance from the External Communications Director

  • Develop relationships with key reporters across a variety of beats, publications and geographies

  • Foster strong working relationships with VCA spokespeople across the country, as well as identify and train new experts

  • Create foundational processes and assets to help build a robust earned media engine, including briefing books, media lists, opportunity tracker(s), media training program(s), etc.

  • Foster collaborative ways of working within the Corporate Affairs Team and with key partners across the VCA network

  • Work independently, take initiative, and function effectively in a nimble, fast-paced, collaborative environment

  • Bring creativity in selecting the best channels for storytelling and a point of view on what content, message and vehicle will really 'move' an audience

  • High attention to detail, creative instincts, and a positive/can-do attitude

  • Excellent writing skills, knowledge of AP style

  • Can be flexible in our environment, and thrive in ambiguity

  • Comfortable around leaders and able to influence without authority

  • Have three or more years of communications experience with increasing levels of responsibility

Additional Information

[Required for CA, NY, WA, CO only]: Compensation is negotiable based on education, experience, and other relevant credentials. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $66,700.00 - $100,000.00. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
