POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Worker - Leaks is primarily responsible for performing underground pipeline replacement for water/wastewater distribution systems. The position responds to leak calls to pinpoint and document leaks found, and is responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems including sanitary sewers and water mains. Operation of a variety of light-to-heavy construction equipment will be required. The Field Worker - Leaks is expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments. The Field Worker - Leaks requires working on a team, but may work alone as necessary.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

This position will be willing and able to perform the following duties and others as assigned:

Leak Detection: Responsible for water leak detection, pinpointing leaks using high and low frequency listening devices, and taking corrective action to replace water leaks. Additionally, will create work orders, generate reports, and interpret data related to distribution systems.

Construction Activities: Perform construction activities required to replace water and wastewater lines. Activities include but are not limited to operating the following light to heavy equipment: shovels for hand excavation to create access to waste and wastewater lines, jackhammer and/or chop saws to provide access through rock and/or concrete, mini-excavators, and backhoes loader at the construction site to move, install, and remove various bulk materials. Additionally, will clean up mud and debris produced by construction activities, repair landscaping, and other ancillary construction activities such as water and wastewater line repairs.

Environmental, Health, and Safety

Safety: Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and adherence to safety procedures in performing all assignments. Attends offsite and company safety classes and meetings as scheduled, ensures safety of self and others, and always puts personnel safety ahead of getting the job done. Understands and works in conformance with safe operating practices and rules. Constantly on alert for any safety hazards that may cause harm to any employee, customer, or member of the general public. Reporting and/or correcting/safe-guarding any hazard, such as but not limited to defective or damaged equipment, or leaking water at any site.

Quality Assurance: Ensures that construction related activities are conducted such that they comply with regulations and company policies related to maintain safe drinking water quality.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Competency Statement(s)

  • Data Interpretation Must have the ability to interpret leak survey results in order to pinpoint leaks. Ability to operate Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and collect accurate data.

  • Accuracy Must be able to perform work accurately and thoroughly, particularly as it applies to working with numbers and interpretation of data.
  • Water/Wastewater Acumen Must have considerable knowledge of water and distribution systems and be able to appropriately apply such knowledge in day to day operations.
  • Communication Skills Able to communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Detail Oriented Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task.
  • Ethical Ability to demonstrate conduct conforming to a set of values and accepted standards. High degree of personal integrity and honesty.
SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: One year of full-time employment in the operation and maintenance of utility water and wastewater systems or underground utility construction with the responsibility for interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and quarter section plat maps; or using electronic devices to locate utility lines and/or water and wastewater leaks.

Must possess general procedures for installing, maintaining, and replacing water and wastewater services; safety hazards, procedures, and equipment used when working on or near underground utility lines; tools, equipment, materials, and supplies needed for installing, maintaining, and repairing water and wastewater lines.

Certifications and Licenses:

Must possess or have the ability to possess a D-Water Operator license from the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or equivalent certification from another state through reciprocity with Texas by application date. Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Must possess a valid Texas Drivers License.
