Shearman & Sterling LLP (the "Firm") seeks to hire a part-time intern to work up to 20 hours/week in our New York City office to support its Financial Restructuring & Insolvency ("FR&I") team, a leading legal practice focused on representing banks, hedge funds, alternative lenders and corporate lenders. The intern will work with our lawyers and staff to identify potential opportunities for both distress and restructuring mandates, as well as other important projects critical to our client service.

Applicants should be (i) enrolled or recent graduates of a top undergraduate business school, (ii) recent graduates with an economics major or with work experience in an investment bank or trading firm for at least one summer or (iii) enrolled in an accredited MBA program and have completed at least one semester.

This position will operate as a hybrid working arrangement.

The Firm seeks candidates with an existing interest in restructurings, as well as demonstrated academic and professional achievement, commitment to excellence, and ability to provide effective and reliable services to supervising lawyers. Under the guidance of a lawyer, the intern will be expected to:

  • Monitor various publications and other resources for potential distress and restructuring opportunities and communicate intelligence gathered to lawyers and other staff on a regular basis.
  • Identify issuers where securities or loans have been downgraded, loans and securities have begun to trade at distressed levels and/or face upcoming maturities and/or liquidity constraints.
  • Analyze capital structures and report on the potential business development targets.
  • Keep internal opportunity lists and databases up-to-date.
