We are on the hunt for a Health, Safety, Environmental, Sustainability Specialist to be based at our Conshohocken, PA location.

  • We are not offering visa sponsorship or relocation for this role at this time.

This role will lead the HSES support function for the Conshohocken, PA R&D/Pilot Plant site, providing continuous improvement services, tools and management systems to the wider organization in achieving Best-in-Class HSES performance. Also will provide supplemental HSES support to the Kansas City, KS site in conjunction with the resident Health & Safety Specialist. Maintain a presence in both service locations and provides practical technical HSES service and field-based support to the sites as directed by the VP, HSES.

Conshohocken, PA Responsibilities:

  • Proposes, develops and partners with the pilot plant/R&D organizations to implement HSE continuous improvement strategies and tools that ensure compliance and support safe operating performance.
  • Directly services the HSE function at the site, including the following types of tasks: leading and/or participating in inspections; audits; training; risk assessments (PHAs), MOCs and pre-start-up safety reviews; HSE permitting; contractor safety processes; industrial hygiene assessments; and monitoring and reporting of HSE performance against improvement plans and targets.
  • Serves as a driver of legislative-required improvements or changes to ensure the site remains in compliance and works with the Pilot Plant/Site Managers, consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with HSE regulations and company policies, procedures and management systems. Must remain current with applicable US, PA and local HSE regulations/ordinances, particularly for Environmental waste requirements.
  • Serves as the lead HSE contact with authorities, external regulatory bodies, insurers, solicitors and other stakeholders as it relates to the site. Prepares regulatory submissions, including required regulatory reporting and appropriate environmental permits.
  • Develops, implements and/or trains others to implement HSE procedures, requirements and management systems. Shares, identifies and imports Best Practices from internal and external sources to encourage the development of an effective R&D/pilot plant HSES toolkit.
  • Develops HSES training materials, conducts training and/or trains-the trainer when other site resources are involved in HSES training.
  • Conducts and/or participates in Perfect Day Event (i.e., safety incident, Level 1-3 Releases, Regulatory/Permit Deviations, Life-Saving Behavior and High Potential incident investigations) as necessary.
  • Assists the site organization in ensuring maintenance of RC/ISO 14001 management systems/certifications. Participates in HSES compliance audits and the Ecovyst 20 Principles audit process, including corrective action planning to completion and as a member of the qualified auditor pool.
  • Serves as primary HSE input on operating capital budgets as well as a reviewer/approver of capital spending requests. Provides guidance for HSE management of substantial projects.
  • Works with the Conshohocken organization in identifying sustainability improvement opportunities and implementing Climate-Change/GHG/Waste Reduction goals.
  • Works in conjunction with other Catalysts and Ecovyst HSES Managers/Specialists in developing and implementing higher level management systems and processes. Works with the organization to implement corporate HSE policies, Perfect Days process, Life Saving Behaviors, Stop.Think.Act., the Preventive Injury Ratio and leading indicators, Enablon and the Green Diamond SIP as it pertains to Conshohocken.

Kansas City Responsibilities:

  • Works in conjunction with the resident Kansas City Health and Safety Specialist as a team to provide HSES support to the Kansas City site. This support may range across the full complement of HSES subject areas as assigned by the VP, HSES. Although servicing within 2022 is anticipated to be weighted more heavily towards Conshohocken, HSES assistance to Kansas City is likely to range up to 50% of the time for Kansas City over time. Although this position will be resident in Conshohocken, the incumbent will travel to the Kansas City site to work with the H&S Specialist and site organization to provide service.
  • Assigned responsibilities relative to the Kansas City site will be complementary to the duties of the resident Kansas City H&S Specialist and may cover analogous subject-areas and responsibilities as indicated above for the Conshohocken site, ranging from environment to occupational health & safety and process safety management tasks.



Requirements:

  • B.S. in science-related area, occupational Health & Safety, Environmental/Chemical Engineering or equivalent technical degree
  • Appropriate health and safety certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of HSE experience, with heavy weighting to direct site-based Health, Safety and Environment technical support.
  • Must be able to serve effectively as a change and continuous improvement agent while also working cooperatively with the site organization and as part of the Ecovyst HSES Department.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of HSE regulations, effective techniques for complying with regulations and negotiating/permitting strategies. Process Safety Management and Environmental knowledge/experience a plus.
  • Strong personal empowerment, interpersonal and communication skills with team orientation.
  • Practical, field orientation with willingness to work within the site and at varying levels to implement HSES solutions.
