The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking to hire two Identity and Access Management (IAM) Specialists to support a suite of identity management, authentication, and authorization services. These individuals will report to the IAM Manager within the Privacy and Security unit at Technology Services, and will work closely with a team of IAM specialists. Their primary role will be managing and supporting a variety of applications and services that enable appropriate access to university IT resources. The ideal candidates would possess excellent communication and documentation skills, as well as the ability to think creatively and work well within a diverse team. The candidates should also be capable of providing excellent customer service and continually improving user experience.

Primary Position Function: Administer and maintain the university's identity and access management systems and services, enabling secure access for all types of users to university IT resources.

Major Duties and Responsibilities - IAM Specialist:

Support and help manage security-focused identity and access management services and solutions

  • Act as service administrator and provide Tier 3 support for assigned IAM systems/services.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upgrades of IAM systems/services.
  • Troubleshoot issues and provide service support to internal and external audiences regarding assigned systems/services.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to implement identity and access management solutions and best practices
  • Provide recommendations for assigned projects, in consultation with project team(s) and related staff.
  • Analyze user support issues for trends and provide recommendations for improving IAM services and solutions.
  • Collaborate with other IAM staff to remediate service outages and issues.
  • Lead the effort to create and maintain technical as well as customer-facing documentation, training, and other educational material in conjunction with support & training staff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities - Senior IAM Specialist:

Implement and manage security-focused identity and access management services and solutions
  • Act as the primary service administrator and/or service owner for assigned IAM systems/services.
  • Lead assigned projects or portions of projects, developing, testing, and implementing plans for maintenance and upgrades of assigned IAM systems/services.
  • Engage with internal and external audiences regarding assigned IAM systems/services and incorporate feedback to improve services.
  • Create or modify scripts, automate tasks, and provide reports related to assigned systems/services.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to implement identity and access management solutions and best practices
  • Implement recommendations for assigned projects, in consultation with project team(s) and related staff.
  • Collaborate with other security staff as needed for security incident remediation.
  • Cultivate subject-matter expertise and skills in less experienced staff, in coordination with management.
  • Provide recommendations on emerging issues and the resources needed to address them for assigned domain(s) to inform management decision-making.

Major Duties and Responsibilities - Lead IAM Specialist:

Implement and manage security-focused identity and access management services and solutions
  • Lead major projects, developing, testing, and implementing plans for maintenance and upgrades of assigned systems/services, with responsibility for service lifecycle management. Assign and prioritize work among staff working on those project(s), in consultation with management.
  • Act as service administrator and/or owner for assigned IAM systems/services, including Tier 3 support.
  • Engage with internal and external audiences regarding assigned systems/services and incorporate feedback to improve services.
  • Create or modify scripts, automate tasks, and generate reports related to assigned systems/services.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to implement identity and access management solutions and best practices
  • Implement assigned projects independently in consultation with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other security staff as needed for security incident remediation.
  • Cultivate subject-matter expertise and skills in less experienced staff, in coordination with management.
  • Provide recommendations on emerging issues and the resources needed to address them for assigned domain(s) to inform management decision-making.
  • Engage peers at other institutions or professional organizations to continuously improve IAM technologies and integrations

Major Duties and Responsibilities - Common to all levels
  • Represent the IT Security office in collaborative and strategic initiatives, applying expertise and functioning as an integral, complementary part of the cybersecurity team
    • Participate in and facilitate internal and external meetings. Drive discussions as needed to represent the needs of the assigned domain(s). Present findings/reports to technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Provide excellent customer service on behalf of the IT Security office.
    • Advocate for Technology Services or other clients and partners in service planning and deployment across the organization.
    • Provide recommendations for continual process improvement across all Security workflows.
    • Draft and review documentation such as analyses of technical, administrative, or procedural security issues; procedural documentation/playbooks; and team documentation.
  • Develop and maintain personal and professional excellence through university-provided and external training/seminars/courses; staying abreast of industry trends, methods, and published literature; and participating in manager-approved innovation programs and individual development initiatives.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications - IAM Specialist
  • Two years of progressively responsible work experience in an IT-related profession. College coursework which included IT or closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
    • 60 semester hours of or an Associate's degree may substitute for one year of experience
    • 90 semester hours or a Bachelor's degree may substitute for two years.
  • Demonstrated experience in user support including troubleshooting technical issues and process documentation

Required Qualifications - Senior IAM Specialist
  • Three years of progressively responsible work experience supporting or administering an IT infrastructure service. College coursework which included IT or closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
    • 60 semester hours of or an Associate's degree may substitute for one year of experience
    • 90 semester hours or a Bachelor's degree may substitute for two years.

Required Qualifications - Lead IAM Specialist
  • Three years of progressively responsible IT work experience in Identity and Access Management. College coursework which included IT or closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
    • 60 semester hours of or an Associate's degree may substitute for one year of experience
    • 90 semester hours or a Bachelor's degree may substitute for two years.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing IAM services related to one or more of the following domains:
    • identity lifecycle management,
    • identity governance and administration (IGA),
    • authentication services including Single Sign-On (SSO),
    • federated identities, and multi-factor authentication (MFA),
    • attribute and role-based access controls (ABAC/RBAC),
    • privileged access management (PAM),
    • target system provisioning,
    • enterprise architecture and integrations.

Preferred Qualifications - IAM Specialist
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a relevant field
  • Experience supporting and/or managing identity and access management services.
  • Experience in one or more of the following domains: system administration, Active Directory, LDAP, databases, APIs and/or web services is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications - Senior IAM Specialist
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a relevant field
  • Experience implementing and managing identity and access management services.
  • Demonstrated scripting experience (i.e. shell scripts, PowerShell, Python, JavaScript, etc.).
  • Experience in one or more of the following domains: system administration, Active Directory, LDAP, databases, APIs and/or web services is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications - Lead IAM Specialist
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience in writing scripts (such as shell scripts, PowerShell, Python, etc.).
  • CISSP, Certified Access Management Specialist (CAMS), Certified Identity and Access Manager (CIAM), Certified Identity Management Professional (CIMP) or other relevant IAM certifications.
  • Leadership training.

Salary and Appointment Information

This is a full-time Civil Service IT Technical Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 6, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
