Position Summary

Michigan State University's Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research is seeking a Linux system administrator (Information Technologist I) who will work with the ICER team to develop, support and optimize ICERs High Performance Computing (HPC) systems using some of the technologies and skills described in the Desired Qualifications section. ICERs HPC systems consist of over 1000 nodes, 50,000 cores, 400 GPUs, and 9 PB of storage and supports researchers in many different scientific domains across the campus and the state.

A successful applicant to this position will, as the key part of their duties, do the following:

  • Participate in the design, development, operation, and support of High Performance Computing systems on campus.
  • Provide first level ticket and helpdesk support for HPCC users.
  • Monitors processing, identifies and resolves abnormal or error conditions, performs initial machine and program loads, schedules jobs using automated software scheduling packages, initiates backups, monitors environmental processes, and performs related responsibilities.
  • Provides training, documentation and assistance to customers and internal staff.
  • Participate in regional and national cyber infrastructure communities, and other duties as assigned.
  • This position includes an emergency on-call support rotation (compensated) with the rest of the systems team.

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible; or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed such as:

    • Linux operating systems - Ubuntu, CentOS, or derivatives
    • Network storage - NFS, CEPH, Spectrum Scale, Lustre, NetApp
    • Deployment methods - puppet, ansible, xCAT
    • Scripting experience - bash, python, perl
    • Version control systems - git
    • Building, troubleshooting, and supporting scientific software
    • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Desired Qualifications

    In addition to the core skills described above, expertise with some subset of the following technologies are desirable:

  • Linux services (NFS, ZFS, OpenSSH, CIFS/SMB.)
  • Virtualization (ESXi or KVM/libvirt) and containers (Docker or Singularity)
  • Networking technologies (Ethernet and Infiniband) and hardware (Mellanox and Juniper)
  • Log aggregation and monitoring (Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana [ELK])
  • Configuration management and automation (tools like xCAT, Puppet, kickstart, SNMP, and IPMI)
  • Batch job queueing and scheduling systems (Slurm)
