About the OpportunityKalamazoo Valley is seeking part time instructor to teach ART 111 Ceramics 2 during the summer semester beginning in May 2024. This class will meet at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, 314 South Park St. in Kalamazoo. This course will further explore clay. Students will continue with designing and making of functional forms with an emphasis on developing wheel throwing skills. Glaze theory and formulation of glazes will be explored.

Student Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate functionalism in form
  • demonstrate discrimination in form and take part in evaluation process
  • design and make a set of bowls and/or plates
  • design and throw series of pitcher forms with a functional spout and a pulled handle
  • demonstrate trimming techniques
  • complete two (2) different covered forms of aesthetic quality with fitted lids
  • demonstrate combined forms of wheel and hand construction
  • develop a glaze series test with color variations using the line blend method
Minimum Qualifications::

Master's degree in applied arts or art education with concentration in ceramics.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience::

College and/or adult teaching experience in ceramics preferred.

Work Hours::

Course meets Monday and Friday, 10:00 a.m.-12:50 p.m.
