Location: Selma, Alabama (hybrid)

Please note: This is a hybrid position that supports The City of Selma Animal Shelter in Selma, Alabama. Only candidates residing in the city of Selma, County of Dallas, or surrounding areas will be considered. This position will require a mixture of remote and in-person work, including visits to the shelter and travel within the Selma/Dallas area.

Compensation: $12.00 per hour

Time Commitment: minimum of 20 hours per week for 4 months (flexible dates between March and August 2024)

This paid internship offers a unique chance to create community engagement initiatives and marketing strategies that promote lifesaving for dogs and cats. During your internship, you will be a part of the Best Friends National Multicultural Marketing Team and Embed Program Team. You will acquire valuable skills that will benefit you regardless of your future aspirations. Your supervisor will provide coaching and support to you, and you can contribute your ideas to the projects you will be responsible for delivering. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain experience from a national organization while also serving your local community.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Develop and implement a monthly marketing and community engagement plan to support helping people and pets, with a focus on decreasing unnecessary shelter intake and increasing local adoptions and fosters.
  • Learn and deploy grassroots marketing and community engagement best practices.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of animal shelter marketing and community engagement.
  • Hone networking skills.
  • Gain a well-rounded knowledge of multicultural marketing, community engagement, the no-kill movement, and Best Friends' mission.
  • Make an impact by helping to save the lives of pets in your community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Only candidates residing in the city of Selma, the county of Dallas, or the surrounding areas will be considered. This position will require a mixture of remote and in-person work, including visits to the shelter and travel within the Selma/Dallas area in Alabama.
  • The minimum time commitment for this position is 20 hours per week at $12.00 per hour for 4 months. More hours may become available based on the intern's availability and team needs. Students seeking college credit are welcome to apply.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel within the Selma area (includes public transportation).

  • If using a personal vehicle for transportation; must have held a valid driver's license for at least three years, possess a clean driving record, and pass a motor vehicle record check.

  • Previous experience/education in marketing and community engagement is a plus, but not required, so don't let this deter you if you are a people loving community-oriented person!
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to people and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, upbeat, energetic, and diplomatic.
  • Demonstrate tact with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Comfortable working with dogs and cats of various temperaments.

  • Ability to work in a shelter environment, which can be loud, stressful, and/or emotionally distressing, and where cats and dogs are currently being killed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products - specifically Outlook, Teams.

  • Best Friends issued laptop will be provided for intern use.

  • Must be able to work for extended periods of time at events or on the computer with repetitive typing, arm, and hand motion, ability to bend, stoop, reach, climb, twist, crawl, stand and walk for an extended period.
