The University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks applications for an Intermediate Lab Specialist position to support Dr. Charles Farber and his lab in the Center for Public Health Genomics. The Lab Specialist will work as part of a collaboration with Orthopaedic surgeons to consent patients in order to collect biospecimens. They will also maintain a database of patient records. The Lab Specialist will work in the Farber lab to coordinate research projects, perform experimental procedures, and prepare tissues and specimens for procedures. Common procedures will include DNA/RNA isolation, cell culture, and PCR. They will oversee day-to-day operation of projects.

About the Farber Lab: Common diseases, such as osteoporosis, impart significant societal health burdens. These diseases are, in part, regulated by genetic determinants. The Farber lab is using genetic approaches to investigate the molecular basis of bone strength. The goal of this work is to develop therapies to improve skeletal health and prevent bone fractures.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following combinations of education and experience:
    • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience in a research centered position
    • 9 years of experience in a research based role research centered position
    • Master's degree and student experience in a research centered position
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

This is a restricted position and continuation will be dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
