Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

The Laboratory Services Assistant position is responsible for clinical laboratory specimen registration, order entry and the pre-analytical preparation necessary for analysis of Inpatient, Outreach, and reference lab specimens. The position is additionally tasked with daily activities needed to support the Laboratory and Outreach Client Service needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for carrying out the daily activities of the Laboratory, including receipt of laboratory specimens, patient registration into the hospital information system, sample preparation, sample labeling, test ordering, scanning documents, faxing documents, sample pickup and delivery to designated areas within the hospital, sorting documents for delivery, filing documents, problem action follow up, fulfilling and preparing supply orders, printing test requisitions, courteous and effective phone and written communications, monitoring stock supplies, generation of lab management reports, monitoring sterilized instrument delivery, lab sample packing and shipping. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Meets or exceeds all performance expectations to include attendance, adherence to work schedule and behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management. Handling human biological specimens including blood, urine and tissue samples.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Completes all Healthstream assignments, Media Lab training, training programs, and follows Standard Operating Procedures, and job aides. Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

One year of working experience in a medical laboratory, patient registration department, doctor office or production environment preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Keyboarding and data entry experience required. Knowledge of medical terminology and/or medical laboratory orders preferred. Familiarity with PC applications preferred Knowledge of ICD 10 diagnosis codes preferred. Telephone skills essential, clear enunciation as well as a pleasant, helpful telephone voice is required in order to provide necessary service to patients/clients and communicate messages accurately to a variety of internal and external customers. Excellent customer service skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outreach clients, vendors, and community groups.
