Position Title: Laboratory Specialist, Health Professions

Department: West Campus

Rate of Pay: Non-Exempt - B23 - $20.19/hour

Position Summary:

The Health Professions Laboratory Specialist is responsible for performing highly skilled technical work with an emphasis on laboratory procedures and protocols in a medical setting following specific guidelines and regulations. The Laboratory Specialist supports various health profession programs, specifically Clinical Research Coordinator, Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Technology, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy. Performs various duties that include the preparation of lab materials for experiments and demonstrations, assessing classroom needs, acquiring material and equipment for classrooms, collaboratively communicating with faculty and co-workers, conducting research, and adhering to safety protocols and regulations. Requires a firm knowledge and expertise of terminology, procedures, techniques, and applicable software. The work schedule for this position is variable and may include evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recommends, develops, and implements laboratory procedures (microbiology, sterile and non-sterile compounding, sample and blood collections, etc.)
  • Researches aligned technologies, recommends and coordinates implementation supportive equipment
  • Oversees and coordinates the preparation and cleanup of materials and equipment for laboratory experiments and mock exams. Activities include the preparation/maintenance of prep sheets and laboratory cultures and chemical solutions, generation/maintenance of experiment schedules/inventory into the designated management system and databases; evaluation of material/equipment needs; and purchase of materials/equipment as approved; generate instructions/guidelines for procedures and protocols
  • Assists in the operation of the health professions learning laboratory such as orienting students on policies and procedures, checking students in and out, checking out materials to students
  • Utilizing specialized equipment (autoclaves, hematology analyzers, microscopes, tube filling machines, etc.) to prepare materials for experiments and the classroom
  • Communicate and provide technical support to faculty and other lab staff regarding experiment and classroom resources and procedures, including waste disposal, ensuring safety guidelines are adhered to, maintaining clean and safe prep lab areas and classrooms
  • Oversees the inventory of supplies, equipment, and other materials needed for the specific health professions programs. Keeps classrooms, prep areas, and Learning Lab clean and stocked with supplies. Identifies and oversees the end-of-semester cleaning of classrooms and prep areas
  • Maintains, stores, and repairs equipment. Checks equipment for effective operation and requirements for preventive maintenance. Maintains a log of repairs. Reports and/or arranges for internal and external repair and/or maintenance of equipment; reports and/or arranges for internal repair and/or maintenance of equipment and facilities
  • Conducts research; compiles and analyzes reports, statistics, and recommendations
  • Works with program directors to help manage the chemical stockroom, maintains safety files, and assists with the disposal of hazardous wastes
  • Assigns, trains, and monitors the work of lab technicians, student workers, and volunteers
  • Participates in the working group to ensure consistency of protocols, procedures, utilization of equipment and facilities across the division by making recommendations to lab supervisors, alerts others to new technology, etc.
  • Work as part of a team to cross-training with other programs and collaborate with student aides on laboratory preparation and equipment to ensure consistency of service during operational hours; advise and assist student aides when materials or equipment is needed for experiments in other programs
  • Assists with outreach programs by preparing materials or performing experiments
  • Assists in the evaluation of operations for effectiveness and makes recommendations and assists with setting goals, objectives, activities, and policies for continuous improvement opportunities
  • Assist faculty to proctor exams, process test scores, and other course/lab exercises
  • Recommend facility changes when needed
  • Adheres to and enforces laboratory safety procedures per federal, state, local, and college regulations for potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Performs regular safety audits, informs supervisor of issues, and maintains safety files. Demonstrates the safe and proper handling/use of chemicals, biohazardous materials, and science equipment.
  • Stays up to date with current and new software utilized in experiments; Updates skills to match new equipment being used in industry
  • Trains and monitors faculty, laboratory staff, and students (as appropriate) in the proper use of laboratory equipment and techniques; provides technical support and serves as a resource
  • Attends yearly laboratory safety programs to ensure compliance with Pima Community College Chemical Hygiene Plan as well as other applicable governmental safety laws, regulations, and standards
  • Able to work autonomously, responsibly, and with minimal supervision, if and when called upon to work virtually. This may include working as an embedded coach or tutor
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor
 

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
or
  • Associate's Degree and
  • Two years lab experience
or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
Preferred:
  • Hands-on phlebotomy experience in venipuncture, sample processing, specimen aliquoting or willingness to learn phlebotomy techniques
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Strong technical knowledge of sterile techniques, maintaining, transferring, and assisting with ID of microorganisms
  • Federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines for working in a science laboratory and blood borne pathogens training for occupational exposure
  • Performing proper handling, storing, and disposing of biohazard chemicals, reagents, and other supplies
  • Comfortable with math calculations common to the medical field
  • Laboratory principles and practices to include safely operating medical grade equipment frequently used in the classroom
  • Proper use and care of laboratory equipment such as autoclave, etc.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite applications
  • Working knowledge of BSL Level II organisms of how to safely grow and dispose of them

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions and fine finger movements - using the fingers to manipulate/handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, sorting/separating small parts; balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and lifting.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, dusts, workspace restrictions, hazardous materials, and intense noises.

May be required to wear standard Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which may include: goggles, gloves, closed-toe shoes, face shield, dust masks, and lab coats/aprons.
