Job Description

Veolia Water Technologies Dayton is currently seeking a Lead Wastewater Operator to work in the Buffalo New York area.

The Lead Wastewater Operator (LWO) will operate and maintain the wastewater plant during first shift. In addition, the LWO will provide leadership and direction to the operators on the other shifts regarding the overall operation and maintenance of the wastewater plant, including process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting equipment and operational issues, maintenance, and sampling. The LWO will communicate with the client and with the Veolia Account Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate the wastewater plant to comply with the requirements of the indirect discharge permit.

  • Provide supervision, leadership, direction, and support to the operators on the other shifts, including the delegation of tasks based on the skills and abilities of the other operators.

  • Conduct lab analysis of the waste streams at various points in the process to verify treatment and to make process changes.

  • Communicate frequently with the Account Manager regarding the operation of the WWTP and request assistance as needed for the site

  • Assist Account Manager with screening and hiring of operators as needed

  • Write or revise Standard Operating Procedures, as necessary.

  • Analyze lab data to uncover potential treatment issues and then implement process changes to prevent non-compliance.

  • Submit daily and/or weekly reports to client and Veolia management regarding the current status of the wastewater plant operations.

  • Manage the operator schedule, including coverage for vacations and sick time.

  • Manage the chemical inventories, spare parts inventory, and waste disposal activities in coordination with client.

  • Provide training and/or facilitate training of operators for all facets of the operation / management of the WWTP

  • Perform Operator Performance Evaluations

  • Manage and enforce the site safety plan to ensure operators are performing tasks safely.

  • Assist client with coordination of maintenance and preventive maintenance activities.

  • Optimize the operation of the wastewater treatment plant

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 10+ years experience in wastewater treatment with knowledge of biological treatment systems.

  • Operational experience of a DAF is preferred

  • 2+ years in a management role

  • Strong mechanical ability and aptitude

  • Good communication skills, both verbally and in written form

  • Ability and desire to build a "team mentality"

  • Effective report writing skills, including narrative and data presentation through spreadsheets and graphs

  • Must have good skills at writing reports, collecting and manipulating data in spreadsheets to generate graphs/tables for discussion with client
