Stanford Bioengineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing department within the School of Engineering and School of Medicine. As staff, you are critical to supporting our organization's goals and enabling us to accomplish our mission of conducting cutting-edge research and formulating innovative solutions to global challenges through the field of bioengineering.The Department of Bioengineering is seeking a full-time Life Science Research Professional to join our team exploring how the brain works and developing new therapies for brain disease. Your work will focus primarily on supporting large animal research under the training and supervision of a staff lead. You will contribute to several projects, both new and ongoing in the lab. You will work closely with research trainees and veterinarians in support of the research and in animal care. This position involves significant training, and no direct large animal experience is necessary-but a love of animals and a passion to contribute to science is critical.   • Contribute to projects investigating brain interfacing technologies under the supervision of the staff lead
  • Employ techniques used with in-depth knowledge in animal care and behavior under the supervision of the staff lead
  • Support the planning and execution of laboratory experiments under the supervision of the staff lead
  • Keeping accurate records of animal health and behavior in accordance with lab standards
  • Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with research trainees and staff lead
  • Responsible for training and advisement of animal care and behavioral training under supervision of the staff lead
  • May also be required to recommend changes in protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems under guidance of the staff lead
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals under direction of the staff lead
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed under supervision of the staff lead
  • Help orient and train new staff and/or students under the supervision of the staff lead
  • Flexibility with other tasks as assigned
This is a 1 year fixed-term position with the opportunity for renewal. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.Preferred Qualifications:
2-plus years experience in a neuroelectrophysiology research group.Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with large animal neuroelectrophysiology research, neurosurgical procedures, and electrode implantation
  • Assist in supporting animal surgeries preparation, sterilization, and post-op care and cleanup
  • Assist in interfacing with safety departments: occupational health, lab inspection, chemical inventory, controlled substances
  • Demonstrate aptitude in foresight, planning, and ability to organize as required by research
  • General understanding of scientific principles
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens
  • Requires work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
