This posting is for current permanent University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign employees who are working within the Locksmith promotional line.

Job Summary
The Locksmith Foreperson is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Locksmith Shop, which includes planning, scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the work of the locksmiths.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises locksmiths assigned to the Locksmith shop
  • Assigns work as submitted from the Work Management Center to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules
  • Performs annual F&S key audit
  • Makes recommendations for hiring and discipline and addresses employee performance issues
  • Provide leadership for emergency response during off normal working hours to handle emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days per year
  • Assists Building Maintenance in developing preventative maintenance estimates and schedules
  • Assists with provided estimates for labor and material cost of jobs assigned by Work Management Center, Project Coordinators, and Engineering to monitor and control craft related cost
  • Performs work at the direction of the Superintendent of Building Maintenance
  • Performs locksmith work as needed or directed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Physical Demands
1. Work is assigned through the Work Management Group, Service office, or via the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds, or his Designee in oral or written form. There is very limited supervision provided. The Foreperson is responsible for assuring the work or projects are completed properly in accordance with statues and codes in a safe and timely manner. The Foreperson must exemplify high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
2. Interacts with Campus Customers, Supervision, Peers and Employees. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the University campus.
3. May work in extreme weather conditions.
4. Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
5. May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
6. This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must
be dealt with daily.
7. The workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.
8. The employee is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current licensure as a Locksmith by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  • Four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in the repair and maintenance of locks, door checks, and related hardware and in the making and duplication of keys, including apprenticeship and/or vocational training.
  • Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience equivalent to the Locksmith Sub-Foreman level of this series.
  • Possession of valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Possess an advanced knowledge of locksmithing and card access systems
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1733 - Locksmith Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. The target salary for this position is $42.67/hour, but final salary will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, relevant bargaining agreements, and/or budget constraints.
