The Operations Team at Northrop Grumman Marine Systems is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Manager 2 based out of our Sunnyvale, CA campus.

What You'll get to Do:
Lead a team of Manufacturing Engineers who are responsible for the manufacturing processes such as welding and fabrication, machining, assembly and finishing. The team will be responsible for providing daily floor support to WIP processes such as processing material discrepancies, optimizing sequence of operations, defining Manufacturing Instructions, identifying continuous improvement opportunities to improve efficiency that may include process or equipment changes, tooling and shop aid needs to improve throughput. The team will focus on creating and managing production routings, assess and optimize workflow within and across process areas, analyzes production processes and output quality to improve efficiencies in plant and productive yields, assigns lead time planning data to make items and work to reduce overall process waste.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • This management role will be 70% technical leadership and 30% functional.
  • Lead the team to monitor and improve manufacturing processes, increase efficiency, reduce product cost and improve yields on all products.
  • Develop competent knowledge of all processes on the floor and provide technical oversight of direct reports work.
  • Coordinate the optimization of manufacturing instructions, labor standards and work measurement specific to process area operations.
  • Act as main process area interface when investigating, identifying and resolving process performance issues.
  • Understand impacts to production and coordinate providing alternate processing recommendations.
  • Interface with Process Area Managers (PAM's), Operations Program Managers (OPM's) and Program leadership on a daily basis to understand technical issues and where we need to focus efforts in supporting production.
  • Support the identification and procurement of new capital equipment and facility preparation/improvement and equipment training activities.
  • Administer and oversee technical program/project execution by managing scope, tasks/schedules/cost projections for all projects; Control Account Management responsibilities.
  • Personnel management duties including headcount forecasting, managing assignments, supporting career development, employee engagement, time approval, staffing, yearly reviews and all other related activities.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree with 9 years of experience; Master's Degree with 7 years of experience; PhD with 4 years of experience (4 additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).
  • 4+ years of experience in a factory environment with fabrication, machining and assembly based processes.
  • 2+ years of experience in leadership and/or management.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret Clearance (US Citizenship).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS or advanced degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical or Welding Engineering/Welding Engineering Technology, Metallurgical/Materials Engineering or related Engineering discipline. MBA highly desirable.
  • Prior experience leading a manufacturing process area or engineering group; demonstrated success in leading, collaborating and developing cross functional teams on complex technical projects.
  • Have a strong background in the development of heavy fabrication, machining and assembly based processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and help coordinate process improvement activities that reduce Assembly and Test time and increase throughput.
  • Experience with coordinating process improvement activities that reduce setup time and increase machine throughput by designing processes to utilize more automation, reduce operator intervention, utilize more advance tooling.
  • Working knowledge of major welding and metallurgical processes: Materials joining, Heat treatment/Stress relief, and equipment, Military welding standards, NDT Inspection processes.
  • Working knowledge of multi-axis machining center operation using conventional machining methods of metallic components.
  • Demonstrated experience in CAM applications.
  • Have a strong background in the assembly and testing of marine based machinery.
  • Continuous improvement Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
  • Proficient in basic and parametric solid model design.
  • Exposure to SAP MES.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities and capital planning, resource and capacity planning.
