About CenturyLink Investment Management

CenturyLink Investment Management (CIM), a separate subsidiary of Lumen Technologies, Inc. (Lumen), is the named investment fiduciary responsible for the investment management of approximately $16 billion of Lumen employee benefit assets, primarily for the benefit of Lumen’s Pension and 401(k) plan participants.  

CIM’s experienced staff, is responsible for determining asset allocation, designing investment strategies, selecting and monitoring external investment managers and implementing internally managed investment strategies.  As a separate subsidiary, CIM reports to its own Board of Directors.  

Job Summary

CIM seeks an experienced investment operations professional with excellent leadership, analytical, communication and project management skills to assist in managing the operational complexities associated with Lumen’s retirement and employee benefit plan assets.   The Manager – Investment Operations (Manager) will be part of the Investment Operations Team and will play a key role in helping CIM achieve its objectives.  In this role, you will perform the essential duties and responsibilities outlined below, working closely with CIM’s Director of Investment Operations and other team members.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the trust and custody bank relationship and services, including trust accounts and custodian bank reporting.
    • Establishes operational risk standards and monitors industry best practices and trends in risk management, trust reporting, and employee benefit plan sponsors.
  • Engage with the plan actuary to understand, measure and report on the defined benefit plan liabilities and benefit payments.
  • Lead and manage reporting, analytics and communications of the Lumen employee retirement and benefit plan assets.
    • Develop, monitor and update performance reporting, analytics and trust performance metrics that help drive decision making.
    • Create board level presentations to communicate investment results, metrics and information to a broad range of stakeholders.
    • Leverage and utilize technology (including third party systems) to enhance the communication of decision-making information, deliver actionable insights and improve operational processes.
  • Direct, design, and implement operational procedures to ensure processes are efficient and effective.
  • Collaborate and establish strong, effective working relationships with CIM Team members, investment managers and industry peers to establish best practices.

  • Strong leadership skills that allow effective communication across CIM teams, ability to lead projects and meetings, confidently deliver presentations and direct third-party service providers.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to visualize complex information and organize it in a format for understanding by senior management.
  • Familiarity with investment concepts, portfolio strategies, asset classes and financial market securities.
  • A transformative leadership mindset oriented towards continuous process and productivity improvement and questioning of the status quo.  
  • Adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to challenge others and ideas respectfully in team discussions and have the demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a small team environment.

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, mathematics, or statistics.
  • 7 years of relevant experience within investment operations, finance or related field showing progressive responsibility.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a team-oriented environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience collaborating and presenting to senior leaders.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, financial modeling skills and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • A solid understanding of investment theory and practice.
  • Unquestionable integrity and the highest ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in business with emphasis in finance or accounting.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or candidacy.
  • Certified Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) designation or candidacy.
  • Basic knowledge of pension fund management and 401(k) plans.

This position is eligible for either short-term incentives or sales compensation. Director and VP positions also are eligible for long-term incentive.
