About the Department:

SMU's Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering, founded in 1925, is one of the oldest engineering schools in the Southwest. The school offers eight undergraduate and 29 graduate programs, including master's and doctoral degrees, through the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Operations Research and Engineering Management. Lyle students participate in programs in the unique Deason Innovation Gym, providing the tools and space to work on immersion design projects and competitions to accelerate leadership development and the framework for innovation; the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership, helping students develop nontechnical skills to prepare them for leadership in diverse technical fields; the Caruth Institute for Engineering Education, developing new methodologies for incorporating engineering education into K-12 schools; and the Hunter and Stephanie Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanity, combining technological innovation with business expertise to address global poverty.

About the Position:

The Director will serve as the leader in developing and implementing a strategic communication and marketing plan to promote the programs, degree offerings/products, and activities of the Lyle School. The position will work closely with the Dean and with others on the leadership team to increase brand awareness with constituents, including: prospective students, corporate partners, executive board members, and media outlets and publications. The position will also work closely with the student recruiting office to create and distribute content and collateral material to support lead generation and interest from prospective students and their parents, and employers.

The Director will raise the visibility of the Lyle School by generating and distributing content and collateral that communicates the mission, offerings, and activities of the Lyle School. The ability to produce error-free communication with the use of proper spelling and grammar is critical.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan to promote programs, degree offerings/products, and activities of the Lyle School.
  • Responsible for development and oversight of social media channels and social media campaign activities.
  • Supervises the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications and works closely with those in the Lyle School to promote activities taking place by faculty, staff and students on behalf of the school.
  • Work with others across campus to promote the Lyle School and identify collaborative marketing
  • Work closely with the student recruiting office to create and distribute content and collateral material to support lead generation and interest from prospective students and their parents, as well as corporate partners.
  • Create and maintain clear metrics to track activities and identify successful marketing campaigns.
  • Provide monthly reporting to the Associate Dean on current marketing strategies and metrics.
  • Monitor marketing spend and develop budget needs for marketing initiatives year-over-year.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required for this role. A Master's degree in marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, business, or similar is preferred.

A minimum of three (3) year of work experience in social media, digital and print communications, advertising, or marketing is required. Previous experience supporting marketing initiatives in higher education is strongly preferred.

Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role is required for this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Candidate must possess excellent organizational skills which include effective planning and project management. Must be focused on deadlines and attentive to details.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and analytical skills.

Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with others.

Experience in Microsoft Suite is required. Previous experience working in a CRM platform is preferred. Ability to learn new software platforms is desired.

Candidate must have outstanding written communication skills, including the proper use of spelling, grammar and punctuation, with the ability to produce error-free communications.
