Performs laboratory tests on patient specimens according to established laboratory procedures. Analyzes results using knowledge of test principles and clinical significance. Analyzes test quality per established performance standards.

Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Reports tests in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate person. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem within a reasonable amount of time. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals. Promotes effective working relations. Works effectively as part of department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, bleeding times, arterial punctures) as appropriate. Serves as a Laboratory Department Lead: Includes, but is not limited to, review of reported test results, organizing department workflow, and establishing department priorities. Responsible for the department's operational excellence and ensures quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards. Establishes, updates, and maintains laboratory section procedure manuals and protocol as assigned. Maintains/orders inventory and supplies required to efficiently operate the section. Orients students/new colleagues. Train colleagues if new procedures, instruments, or methods are established. Maintains records/documentation in compliance with required rules/regulations of licensing and accrediting agencies and organizations as assigned. Effectively communicates sectional and industrial information to staff. Attends required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety and specific job-related hazards. Follows hospital exposure control plans/blood-borne and airborne pathogens. Attends continuing educational programs to maintain competencies and certification requirements. Demonstrates regard for safety, respect and dignity for all patients, families, visitors and colleagues to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Demonstrates age-specific competencies as defined by the department. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.


Education: Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent field of study.

Certification: Registered as MT, MLS, or CLS by a nationally recognized professional registry. Certification within 1 year of employment is required.

Experience: Clinical laboratory internship and/or five years of clinical laboratory work experience. Must qualify as a Technical Consultant for Moderate Complexity Testing and/or Technical Supervisor for High Complexity Testing as defined by the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Act (CLIA).
