Network Analyst - Windows Administrator

Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS)

University of Illinois System - Urbana

The University System Office seeks a Network Analyst - Windows Administrator to help ensure the operating reliability and efficiency of server hardware and software for the University's administrative computer system in multiple sites. This position is responsible for the 24x7 technical support of System Office services hosted on AITS servers. This is a position which requires technical expertise with Windows server administration as well as industry practices. Responsibilities include solving technical issues and following direction in the design and implementation of complex systems. This role requires understanding of and experience installing, configuring, and maintaining Windows-based servers and the ability to involve risk assessment and user support. This role leverages expertise with the Windows operating system and server administration to deploy servers, support day-to-day system operations, and prevent data loss and unauthorized access.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Install and configure servers:

  • Create, modify, and maintain systems which are deployed on Windows Hyper-V or real hardware
  • Maintain utility/system software
  • Provide expertise in multiple versions of the Windows operating system environments (Windows 2012, Windows 2016, Windows 2019)
  • Use system administration tools such as Microsoft VMM, Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager, Microsoft Hyper-V Manager, Dell iDRAC, Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, -Microsoft Windows Update Services, and Veritas NetBackup for management of servers
  • Follows industry best standards with respect to server administration tasks
Provide technical support and guidance:
  • Guide and provide technical direction to internal/external technical staff.
  • Develop scripts, procedures, for other staff to assist with work.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for server administrators which rotates through each person in the group and each person is on-call for one week.
  • Helps troubleshooting and diagnosing of production and development problems. Leads problem-solving efforts, sometimes involving outside vendors and other support personnel.
Perform system maintenance:
  • Apply operating system updates and configuration changes along with updating utility software products on they systems.
  • Coordinate tasks with other groups and schedules changes through change control.
Help with system performance:
  • Work with other groups on server or application performance issues
  • Watch system alerts from monitors to correct abnormal conditions
Maintain system security:
  • Work on server security issues found with internal AITS network scanning tools
  • Stay current with technological developments and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology to improve security.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Any combination totaling two (2) years from the following categories:
    • Progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession.
    • College course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year
      • 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years.
    Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum 3-5 years IT work experience in complex systems design, programming, and systems software and support.
  • Experience using Microsoft Hyper-V, clustering Hyper-V nodes, including using Microsoft VMM for management of the environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft WSUS deployment to patch large numbers of servers.
  • Experience using Microsoft SCCM to maintain consistent levels of software across hundreds of servers and create ad-hoc server reports.


  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in oral and written communications, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical or non-technical staff.
  • Problem solving/analysis skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.

    This is a full-time Civil Service IT Technical Associate position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after July 12, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
