Description
Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine is a growing practice that provides clinic-based evaluation and treatment of sports-related injuries, as well as off-site care as the region's top medical provider for professional, masters, collegiate, high school level and all athletes in between.

The MGB Sports Nurse Practitioner will provide walk-in orthopedic services at one of our MGB Urgent Care sites, for several days of the week. In addition, this NP will provide virtual urgent (same day) care. This NP will have a role in shaping a new MGB Sports orthopedic virtual/urgent care program, and over time, may work with a team of APPs who would service a greater scope of urgent care sites and patients with urgent orthopedic needs.

Under the clinical supervision of the Chair of Newton Wellesley Hospital's Department of Orthopedics, who also serves as the Clinical Leader for Community Hospitals within MGB Sports, and the Administrative Director of Newton Wellesley Hospital's Department of Orthopedics, the NP will participate in the care of orthopedic patients within the primary urgent care practice as well as virtually scheduled patients. The NP coordinates and participates in treatment of patients both in-person and virtually, ensuring coordination of care including, but not limited to, referral to physicians for follow up, referral for imaging/lab work based on needs, and appropriately documenting patient care provided. Procedural care may include casting, bracing, and fracture stabilization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  • Performs initial evaluation of orthopedic patients; obtains and documents appropriate and comprehensive health histories; performs and documents appropriate and comprehensive physical examinations.
  • Orders and interprets x-rays, MRIs and other diagnostic tests.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to:
    • wound care/debridement
    • tube/drain insertion, care, or removal
    • suturing/suture removal
    • splint, brace or cast application or removal
    • medication administration and the injection of steroid and anesthetic agents
  • Determines the treatment plan and follow-up schedule; consults with appropriate resources as needed and recommends appropriate specialty. Documents the treatment plan and writes appropriate orders.
  • Coordinate's elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Review's patient care management issues with physician team.
  • Records patients' treatment, response and progress notes and enters orders in EMR in accordance with Medical Staff policies.
  • Provides first-level response to acute patient complications and emergencies and initiates appropriate measures.
  • Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families. Provides psychological, emotional and informational support to patients and families. Communicates patient needs to appropriate team members.
  • Demonstrates timeliness and reliability. Accepts responsibility and accountability for his/her actions in delivering patient care.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively and establishes good rapport with all levels of personnel including communicating with appropriate physicians to coordinate care, working with access center to appropriately schedule patient for follow-up, etc.
  • Participates in development of MGB Sports virtual/urgent care program, providing input from clinical perspective, on ideal processes and clinical pathways, to ensure best experience and highest quality care for patients.

Qualifications: (Must be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
  • NP Licensure
  • Five years' experience in the specialty of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine preferred.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies: (Must be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam, and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for surgical patients in both elective and emergent situations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Evidence of continued education and professional development.
  • CPR (BLS) certification required.
  • Knowledge of the special needs and behaviors of infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult patients preferred.

Supervisory Resonsibilities: List the number of FTEs supervised.
  • No direct reports; may indirectly provide leadership and guidance to less seasoned and new staff
Fiscal Responsibility: Indicate financial "scope" information, i.e.: size of budget, volume, revenue, etc.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively using Mass General Brigham resources
Working Conditions: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
  • Possible local travel to Mass General Brigham sites
