IU Studios is the central marketing and communications unit at Indiana University, and includes the University Events and Conferences teams. Our insights and technology-driven teams serve as strategic consultants throughout the university, with a central mission to create experiences that lead to a lifelong love for IU and IUPUI.

Job Summary

IU Studios is responsible for media relations, internal communications, social media, executive communications, media planning, marketing, web, and creative and content services at both the university and campus levels.

The Digital News Content Intern plays a vital role in assisting with the day-to-day needs for the official Indiana University Newsroom and Indiana University social media accounts. This includes posting and planning social media posts, further strengthening engagement among the university's key audiences while advancing its marketing communications objectives.

Position Specifications:

  • Reports to the Media Relations and Social Media team
  • Responsible for helping to create and curate engaging content for Twitter, Instagram, and opportunity for other social media platforms.
  • Monitors-and may be asked to respond to-social media channels for questions and concerns from key audiences, especially during crises or regarding highly-sensitive issues and communicates findings with the rest of the team.
  • Compiles and analyzes important metrics of social media activity and communicates findings with the team to support strategic goals and objectives.
  • Identifies and reviews news and social media trends and works with the team to draft and modify strategies appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or necessary for the effective operation of IU VPCM.
The position is usually two semesters; however, depending on performance, has the potential to be extended.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create copy/graphic/video to accompany news stories on social media platforms
    • This includes but not limited to short informational videos, infographics, Instagram stories, post copy, etc.
  • Engage our audience through social media outreach, including reporters and media outlets.
  • Work with other staff, including IU Studios photographers/videographers, to have relevant visual content accompanying new stories.
  • Assist with tracking social media analytics and developing reports related to media mentions, engagements, and sentiment.
  • Keep an eye on new trends daily and report to the supervisors if anything may fit our strategic goals.
  • Assist with live-tweeting news conferences or university administration events
  • Help monitor media and any emerging issues on social media channels and report back to the supervisors.
  • Assist in general with day-to-day tweets on the News at IU account and Indiana University account.
Open to all IU Bloomington students, but preference is given to those in journalism, public relations, marketing or communications. Proficiency in crafting and implementing social media strategy, as well as analyzing and producing content. Must be able to juggle many projects simultaneously and successfully.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
The successful candidate will have the following skills:
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write copy tailored to specific channels and audiences
  • Visual and creative acuity
  • Strong media literacy and familiarity with news
  • Photo, video and graphic design background (experience with Adobe Suite a plus)
  • Knowledge of trends in the news and social media industry and a willingness to continually expand their understanding
  • Ability to think quick-on-your-feet and feel comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • A basic understanding of social media marketing and communications metrics
  • A flexible disposition
  • A positive attitude and teamwork-focused approach

    Working Conditions / Demands

    Approximately 15 hours per week.
